  • ASL, anyone?

Has anyone here taken ASL classes or are interested or know ASL? I'm taking the interpreter courses at Lone Star College Cy-Fair. I find ASL and Deaf culture really interesting.

Truth is the cement that holds the bricks and stones of a sane and civilized society together. Remove the former and the latter will crumble.

Apparently on this board I'm going to have to be more specific, AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE. I'm pretty sure I'm too old and married for the other.

I was in the ASL interpreter program at NHC back in 98-99. It's been a while since I signed, but I just loved it. Deaf culture is quite amazing.....

I'm guilty of thinking the same thing.

I'm taking the same program. My understanding is U of H is going to offer a 4 year interpreter degree starting next year. They are changing the laws so that interpreters will have to have a 4 year degree. It's really challenging and frustrating at times, but amazing as well.

I work in a school district and we contract for ASL interpretation for one student for an absolutely unbelievable amount of money.

I can sign a few things, mostly single words. I'm a speech-language pathologist and we sometimes use sign language as a bridge to oral language for non-verbal kids. Our high school offers ASL as a second language option, like Spanish or French.
