Do you really need 42 rounds? I'm sure it makes you feel safer but if you couldn't hit them or scare them away with the first 10 or so...

Is that the Glock 17?
I found it to be too big to easily conceal. I have one, but decided on the Spingfield XD subcompact in 40SW for my carry gun.Last edited by Lifeguard6t9; 01-28-2009, 10:27 PM.2 magic fish, 1 tank, finally took the plunge...

It is stupid escalation. People see a gun and it is automatically a threat. Two people with bad attitudes and open carry firearms cross paths and bad things happen. Even one. If someone thinks they can be an @hole to me just cause they have a firearm showing they better be able to pull it fast if they are close to me. Police officers are the only ones that should have open carry firearms, as there job to serve and protect should demand the respect of carrying an open firearm. I have no problem with people wanting to protect themselves but showing it openly is asking for trouble.

Are we talking a license to carry an unconcealed weapon?..with background checks and some form of control over it, or just to let whoever wants to carry a gun? I'm in favor of the first, but vehemently opposed to the second. There is a large percentage of the pouplation who have no business carrying weapons around, concealed or otherwise. I think Matt brings up a good point: it will probably result in escalation of incidents of gunfights. This is not without precedent. Back when everyone carried a gun in this country, local law enforcement in the towns and cities began restriction open handguns for just that reason. When people are blasting away at each other, they stand to hit just as many bystanders as each other. Not to say the the same thing doesn't happen with people possessing CHL licenses shooting at each other.
One thing that is a proven fact: back when everyone went armed, we were a much, much politer society. When you know than an inappropriate word or action can get you shot, you tend to temper your behavior.
MarkWhat are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

We had open carry in the Wild West. Can you imagine what would happen today? If you bumped into someone and they drew on you b/c you "disrespected" him and tarnished his street cred ---what then? What if he shot you in the face without warning and his 4 buddies said you started it?
What if you were a bystander with your child who happened to get shot or had to pick up your dead child off the pavement because a stray bullet missed the intended target?
Why do we need to carry guns? I believe in the right to own guns. I believe in protecting yourself. I also believe that there are many people that do not possess the mental faculties and maturity to use them safely.

Open carry is for cowboys. The element of surprise, and relaxed action are what you need in a situation where a gun is required.
When the perp/perps see you have a gun it allows them an opportunity to plan and predict. In that situation they have the edge, don't doubt it.
They can execute their plan knowing all the variables, but when they try something on someone they think is unarmed and all of a sudden the "victim" is pointing a gun at them it kind of messes things up.
Sure, go ahead and make it legal, the news isn't entertaining enough these days.
