Here's the latest, and right in our back yard:

ORCHARD, Texas – A third-grader at Brazos Elementary was given a week’s detention for possessing a Jolly Rancher.

School officials in western Fort Bend County are defending the seemingly harsh sentence. The school’s principal and superintendent said they were simply complying with a state law that limits junk food in schools.

But the girl’s parents say it’s a huge overreaction.

“I think it’s stupid to give a kid a week’s worth of detention for a piece of candy,” said Amber Brazda, the girl’s mother. "The whole thing was just ridiculous to me."

Leighann Adair, 10, was eating lunch Monday when a teacher confiscated the candy. Her parents said she was in tears when she arrived home later that afternoon and handed them the detention notice.

According to the disciplinary referral, she would be separated from other students during lunch and recess through Friday.
Notice it has nothing to do with politics (illegal immigration, political party affiliation, race/ethnicity, gender etc..). This is just a straight up FAIL for the school to make such a stupid decision.

BTW.. My school SOLD Jolly Ranchers at the concession stand, which was open at lunch every day!

We had a candy store (storage room turned candy store) along with several vending machines and of course the entrepreneurs that slanged candy on the side.

If it were my kid I'd go buy a case of Low fat candy and have them bring back packs full to school.... skip the lunch when you can have nothing but candy! Probably throw in some low carb/calorie energy drinks too.

oh of course not! No hidden meaning behind it at all, if you meant the dope dealers they were there too but it didn't pertain to the topic and when I went to school not many people were popping "candy".

"It's disrespectful to do it on Cinco de Mayo," said Jessica Cortez, a Live Oak sophomore. "They can be a patriot on some other day. Not that specific day."

Hispanic students felt students wearing American flags were disrespecting the Mexican-American students on Cinco de Mayo - a day on which they celebrate their Mexican heritage.

I don't suppose too many folks can remember this ....but in my high school, we actually had those old vendor machines that sold candy bars like 3 Muskateers, Mars Bars, Snickers, etc.....they were quite popular.....we also had fresh fruit vendening machines as well, with both Red and Green apples....

Truth is the cement that holds the bricks and stones of a sane and civilized society together. Remove the former and the latter will crumble.

I guarantee if you ask the Hispanic students marching and protesting what the meaning behind Cinco de Mayo was, the majority would either not know or give an incorrect answer.

Really? One sanctioned by the school? That's crazy. I didn't think schools ever allowed something like that.

Yeah, then they tried to take it away when I was in my senior year. Once I was already an addict. Go figure!
