  • Enough of the Cinco De Mayo nonsense

My head is about to explode with the nonsensical outrage over the 5th of May.

    Facts:
    1. Cinco De Mayo is a made up BEER COMPANY holiday. It IS NOT a celebrated Mexican holiday in Mexico. It was fabricated by Corona beer to sell more Mexican beer by choosing a historical date and sensationalizing it into a beerfest.

    2. This is the United States (Period). We should celebrate and allow the celebration of all cultures BUT never above the USA. I.E. It is NEVER, (I'll say it again) NEVER on any day acceptable in the United States to discourage ANYONE in this country from expressing their pride for the USA or to be openly patriotic.

It is the tolerance of the USA and it's people that resulted in the CREATION of this fabricated Beerfest holiday. If people want to celebrate this day and fatten the pockets of the beer companies, GREAT! But remember WHERE you are, WHY you're here and HOW it is that you have this right before you overstep and put this day ahead of the USA

I'm sorry, I don't understand what your point is. It's a made up holiday that mostly whites celebrate and it helps the economy so what's the problem? I have a lot of friends from Mexico and none of them celebrate it, but my white friends use it as an excuse to go eat Mexican food. What is wrong with that? You didn't state exactly what your issue is.

The following stories that have dominated the airwaves since Wednesday.

California Students Sent Home for Wearing U.S. Flags on Cinco de Mayo

Klein ISD on the defensive after Mexican flag flap

Student tore it down, saying it disrespected U.S.

The date is a real historical event BUT, it is not a national day of observance (of any sort) in Mexico.

#2 is in reference to stories I posted.

Cinco de Mayonotes the day the Mexicans ran the French out of a small town in Mexico in a small skirmish. The French came back with more troops and took the town back later.

This is one thing I dont agree with you Charles. If we must stop "celebrating" this then we should stop Oktoberfest, St. Patys, Chinese New Years, and etc. Schools and other places put up heritage celebrations for other events why is this different. If Americans like to take a day and make it a drinking day then so be it. It isnt a national holiday. If it were then I would join your band wagon but its not so its fine for me. Plus lately Mexico has started celebrating the day more because I am sure they thought hey why are the Americans having so much fun on this day when its supposed to be our day. The same goes for St. Patricks day. Irish didnt celebrate the day hardly at all until the late 90's when they had their first parade and started drinking on the day. They decided that if Americans are going to have fun on our day then we should too. So you see Americans are spreading love around the world by drinking on everyone else's special day. I think the stigma that Irish are drunks should change because clearly Americans are the drunks we find any reason we can to go to the bar and get blasted.

i somewhat get what you are saying but at the same time you are making it sound like people hold cinco de mayo up as a legit national holiday and we don't...its not recognized by the government as a holiday kids don't get out of school, people don't get off work the post office still runs...it is possible for people to go on about there business unaffected....i went the whole day without even realizing it was cinco de mayo and that would never happen with 4th of July or Memorial Day...and rightfully so....since the are US holidays...so I am not really sure what you meant by people putting it ahead of the USA. just my take on it...

You are correct, it's a made up celebration date not a holiday.

Definition, Synonyms, Translations of holiday by The Free Dictionary

                        Holiday:

                        1. A day free from work that one may spend at leisure, especially a day on which custom or the law dictates a halting of general business activity to commemorate or celebrate a particular event.
                        2. A religious feast day, a holy day.
                        3. Chiefly British A vacation. Often used in the phrase on holiday.

If you read the news stories, you will see that High School students have been punished for their being patriotic on this made up day of celebration. They have also been threatened as well as their families being threatened.

I have never personally heard of Irish imigrants expecting all American Patriotism to come to a complete halt on St Patricks Day. Nor have I ever heard of Irish imigrants being openly anti American and expecting the whole country to adapt to suit them (rather than adapting to the United States) while simultaniously enjoying the opportunities The United States affords them (opportunities they would not have in Mexico or anywhere else for that matter)

I am not so sure if this student was being patriotic or being a kid. From what I am reading the school does the same thing for other nationalities as well and never had an incident. They and other students have said that the school has had heritage days from German descent and etc and the boy never raised an issue with those. So my question is was this really the first time any heritage day was put up or was this kid reacting to the negative publicity over the AZ law and that it would be a good idea to show what is being done to the American way. I am in favor with the immigration laws but if we are making everything equal then I do not see any issues with the school doing the Mexican flag as long as other nationalities are also displayed in the same spot on their heritage dates.
