From what I am reading the school does the same thing for other nationalities as well and never had an incident. They and other students have said that the school has had heritage days from German descent and etc and the boy never raised an issue with those. So my question is was this really the first time any heritage day was put up or was this kid reacting to the negative publicity over the AZ law and that it would be a good idea to show what is being done to the American way. I am in favor with the immigration laws but if we are making everything equal then I do not see any issues with the school doing the Mexican flag as long as other nationalities are also displayed in the same spot on their heritage dates.
The 16 yo student was in ROTC and was the one responsible for the raising of the US Flag. His issue was that the Mexico flag was displayed prominantly 4 feet above the American Flag in the hallway. This is a violation of "Flag Etiquette" (akin to letting the US Flag touch the ground) and he raised the issue with the Principal. He was blown off. He called his Mother who then called the school to raise this issue. She was blown off. He then removed the flag and went to the office where nobody claimed it. He then threw it away. He was given in school suspension and kicked out of ROTC as a result.
The issue was NOT the country the flag represented, it was the manner in which it was displayed. He has stated this since the incident on May 5th and has held to this. The School spokeswoman admitted that this was not the standard for the celebration of other countries "Heritage Days" as this was a flag that another student brought from home (with the schools permission) to display in the hallway with all the other flags. All men are created equal but his choices determine his value and what's in his heart determines his worth.

Facts:
1. Cinco De Mayo is a made up BEER COMPANY holiday. It IS NOT a celebrated Mexican holiday in Mexico. It was fabricated by Corona beer to sell more Mexican beer by choosing a historical date and sensationalizing it into a beerfest.
2. This is the United States (Period). We should celebrate and allow the celebration of all cultures BUT never above the USA. I.E. It is NEVER, (I'll say it again) NEVER on any day acceptable in the United States to discourage ANYONE in this country from expressing their pride for the USA or to be openly patriotic.
It is the tolerance of the USA and it's people that resulted in the CREATION of this fabricated Beerfest holiday. If people want to celebrate this day and fatten the pockets of the beer companies, GREAT! But remember WHERE you are, WHY you're here and HOW it is that you have this right before you overstep and put this day ahead of the USA

The flag may not have been represented correctly, but that child was still wrong. It was not his place to do what he did and it certainly wasn't his place to be throwing anything away. I know people outside of Texas that are totally offended by the fact that Texas can have their flag at the same level as the US flag.
I think we need to all learn some compassion and sensitivity to people who are different from ourselves and celebrate those differences instead of making major issues out of minor things. Cinco de Mayo is fun and a good excuse to go eat Mexican food and drink margaritas. If the schools or whoever wants to celebrate the Mexican heritage on that one day then big deal, the kids (or adults) who don't like Mexicans or Cinco de Mayo can live for one day.Karen

I don't have a problem with the day or the celebration. My problem is our leftist schools stifling students from being patriotic on ANY day.All men are created equal but his choices determine his value and what's in his heart determines his worth.

Back on point, I agree that technically the kid broke the rules, and therefore technically he must be punished. What we must all do however is step back and ask why he did what he did. Cinco De Mayo has gone from a simple marketing campaign to give Americans an excuse to drink and party one extra day every year, to a full blown celebration of Mexican and Hispanic/Latino pride. The problem is that in our country's history, no ethnicity or nationality has attempted to push theur culture so strongly since perhaps the first European settlers did against the native Americans.
Couple that with en masse illegal immigration along our massive southern border to Mexico, and of a predominantly Hispanic population, and the fear of Americans multiplies. Cinco De Mayo was just the spark to ignite the fuse of frustration among Americans who are tired of illegals taking jobs, soaking up resources (schools, hospitals, medicaid, foodstamps, etc..), and who seem to have no interest in contributing to our society, but instead holding on fiercely to theirs. This frustrates people like myself because they don't want to learn English, but they expect us to learn Spanish. They don't want to pay taxes and be on a payroll but they want to recieve tax sponsored programs. Worst of all, they don't want to become citizens, but instead live in this country and abuse its laws of equal rights and free speech for all by protesting the very laws they don't wish to abide by.
I'm sure had St. Patty's day been a big event in the northeast in the early 1800's before the Irish would have come over, the same thing would have happened once they were there. The Irish would march in the streets demanding equal treatment, and American's would oppose it.Last edited by jeebus; 05-10-2010, 06:50 PM.Experiencing an aquatic renaissance!

If it's a myth then why do they do it? I've seen the Texas flag as high as the US flag in several business places in Texas.
And as far as the Europeans and the Native Americans..............well, we all know how that one turned out.Karen
