  • Why do people push a baby state today?

San Francisco bans toys in happy meals that do not substitute fruits for fries. Why do liberals feel that they need to parent parents? They say this law gives parents a fair shot when convincing their children to go for healthy food choices. I am sorry but if you cant tell your kids no on your own then you are an un-fit parent and you need to stop babying your kid and trying to appease their every needs.

San Francisco bans Happy Meal toys
Sorry, kids: Turns out a happy meal is not a healthy meal, at least according to the standards of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. The board approved a preliminary ban that would strip toys from fast-food meals loaded with calories, salt, sugar, and fat.

The ban has its critics — San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom for one, McDonald's for another. But the ban backers argue that the legislation aims to give parents a fair shot when convincing junior to go for the healthy — or at least healthier — choice without being tempted by a Shrek toy. A report from the Federal Trade Commision ranked food marketing to kids under 12 — the prime target for Happy Meals — as an $870 million business.
A McDonald's franchise owner accused the ordinance of taking the happy out of their meals. Other critics pointed out that the ban would be bad for business: What would stop Happy Meal fans from driving to the next town over to get their fix. McDonald's denounced the decision as one that parents did not want. And a dietitian weighed in on an admirable effort, but ultimately not one that will cure the epidemic of child obesity. If the final vote is approved next week, the ban would begin in December 2011.

This country is filled with parents who are fans of "time-outs," not telling "no," believe me when I say, it spans across the board of political ideologies. If you look at a map of Michigan, outlined in the color of the parties, you'll see that only in Detroit is consistently blue. Now, I taught in the Western side of the state. I can tell you, kids are freakin' spoiled. When I am with my nephew, I teach him about choices, and that the choice you make has consequences. I tell him what we're doing for the day before, and premise it with the fact that it's predicated on his behavior. "Well, you can keep doing what you're doing, and we'll just leave and go home. . . OR you can stop, and we can stay and keep having fun." If he doesn't stop, we leave and go home. He hates that more than anything, so he's been making the choice to act "good."

I'm not a fan of food laws, in general, and I'm not a fan of laws for "parenting" parents. . . combine those two, and it's something I really don't like. Look, I'm a big dude. I could stand to avoid McDonald's pretty much forever. I don't need someone to tell me that. I know it's bad for me. I've known for awhile (I was also between 8-12% body fat until I was 22). In two months, the doctor is going to ream me a new one, so I've already started with the losing (down 7 lbs.). . . but it's ultimately my choice.

You are right that both dems and reps have problems saying no. However, it's only dems that want it in the laws.

Nothing in what I said disagrees with that, and I agreed that I thought the laws are stupid (you made mention of specific parental behaviors as being "unfit" and I made the assertion that your description runs the gamut of people from all walks of life). . . and I'm going to back and finish my cheeseburger now.

A Happy Meal once in a week isn't killing anyone. It's consistent consumption, combined with no exercise, that is the issue. I haven't seen any laws limiting video game playing time or mandatory "playing tag" time. . .

so if the reps want it to be law it would be ok?

I don't see where that's even implied, so it appears to just be argumentative. BUT, for the sake of argument, in my opinion, no. No one, regardless of party affiliation, has the right to tell me what I feed myself or my family.

Let's take a Poll......what is more harmful for children....Happy Meals or floridated water....?

HINT: “There have also been twenty-three studies indicating a lowered IQ in children associated with levels as low as 1.9 ppm fluoride in drinking water.”

In reality the old adage in moderation is so true. If you actually look at it almost everything is fine in moderation. But as humans we have a hard time cutting ourselves off when we are in excess because excess is so much more fun then only taking what you need.

all of the major food chains already offer healthier alternatives in place of fries and soda. McDonalds, Sonic, Burger King, etc. They all already offer them, so it won't end up being a problem for them. the ones that don't will start, and life will continue to go on as usual. no one is trying to tell anyone what to eat, only that if they want to give away free toys then they will have to OFFER a healthy alternative, not make the healthy alternative mandatory.
