I voted Government but I want to add the caveat that there are private citizens directing the fed as well.

I say government because only the government can thoroughly screw up the economy single handily like they are with the purchase of $600B in Treasury notes.

Does the US Government run the Federal Reserve?

I said No. They are 'accountable' to Congress, but they don't have to get approval from anyone in Government to do what they want. I don't think they are necessarily 'private' either though. The Fed is something unlike any other structure in this country. It's kind of confusing.

Not surprising that you find it confusing, Traci. Many in the gov't have no idea how it works and who really runs it. As far as I can gather, it's also the only financial entity in the US that's immune from audit.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

Dunno the answer, but i find it hard to believe that the federal reserve will ignore any orders handed down by congress / executive branch.

All i know is, since they announced that they started printing money, i have moved most of my savings back to Singapore before inflation kicks in and the USD is worth nothing.
