He registered an account and then ran a script against the site created a post in all the forums. I have to assume the script was trying to write some kind of html or other code into the posts but since we don't allow it, it was converted to those special characters.

No! Guys...the attack today didn't get in the inter workings of the forum at all. It did no more than post a bunch of garbled messages.
The internal server error is something I've seen many times. It happens when the server either can't understand what is being sent in the message (because of a copy-paste issue), or there is too much data in the PM...like when there are many many quoted messages. I have no doubt there are other reasons, but those are a couple I've seen.
