I am sad, my new clownfish turned up dead last night for no apparent reason.
He was still fine around 6, 7 pm, hovering on the same Monti cap. I went out for a couple of hours and he was dead when I came back.

I have had a clownfish for maybe a year, 2-3" long, never hosted anything. I have RBTA and other corals that it can host.
Yesterday, I bought a second, a little smaller. Instantly, the bigger one came by and danced the clownfish dance with the new one. Shortly after, she would play hide and seek in/ out of a frogspawn. The new clownfish, dumb as dirt, would host a Monti cap nearby for hours.

My guess is, it's not that one clownfish that teaches the other the trick, it's the pairing/ mating instinct that causes clownfish to host.
im not too sure about that. When I just got my pair of aquacultured clowns. They won't not host anything. Each had their own corner when they slept but they would randomly swim together around the tank and not really stick to one spot until sleep time. I later got an anemone for them to host yet they would just ignore the anemone. I later searched the web on how to make the clowns host. I printed out pictures of clowns hosting anemones, and sure enough a few hours later both were sitting inside the anemone.

This coulda been weird luck, but it sure is interesting as heck. But sorry for your lost. I lost a helfrechi firefish the same way.

I watched them for hours the day before and yesterday, no one bothered this new clownfish that whole time. The only thing was that he kept hovering over that Monti cap for a long long time.

I really don't know what it was.
