no you dont need a lot of live rock. If you buy full colonies or bigger corals they come on rocks. now if your buying little frag disk frags then you will need more. I found out that buying a large colony of zoas is more cost effective then buying a frag. For instance, I bought 30 cherry bomb zoas on a frag disk for 30$, I have seen a 4x5" rock covered in them for 59$ at lfs. The rock had 4x or more zoas on it than the disk.75gal reef aka the $$$$ pit.

Here is a Pic.
Box 3 is the submursable pump. Water is about 2-3 inches above the pump.
Box 2 is the bio balls
Box 1 is where the heater is. I can move it to the side of the water pump. And put the fuge in there.A wife, two kids and two cats.

bio balls can get dirty and create more problems with nitrate levels in the long run. Besides you have live rock in the tank. the live rock will be your bio balls. Turn the bio ball area into a refugium. If your ever up here by new caney i will give you some of my home grown chaeto. Besides the refugium is going to lower nitrates and phosphates and do more than the bio balls would ever do.75gal reef aka the $$$$ pit.

chaeto is free dude. there is people on marsh always giving it away too. It just grows then you rip in half and throw out. Its like an underwater tumble weed. it just balls up when it grows, so you don't have to worry about getting it in your tank. Give me about a month and i will be throwing some more out. I would remove the bioballs now just to let more of the bacteria float around and find your live rock instead of it growing on bio balls and then removing it.75gal reef aka the $$$$ pit.
