hey next time some one starts a tank, they should just ask one of us (who ever is closest) for some old water after a water change. that would help cycle the tank faster.

I think this would be of limited value as the nitrifying bacteria colonize surfaces, not free-floating in the water column.

Nitrates, phosphates, Fish poo, decaying mater, coraline algae, micro algae, and bacteria. When you do a water change are you not vacuming the substrate? And the bacteria is in the substrate right? So how do you not get bacteria in a water change?

You may get SOME bacteria, that's why I posted "limited value" as opposed to "useless". Nitrifying bacteria exude a sticky substance that "glues" them to the surfaces on which they live and they don't give up that hold easily. If they did, fluidized bed filters wouldn't work. If vaccuuming substrate removed a substantial portion of the beneficial bacteria, then the tank could go through a cycle every time the substrate was vaccuumed.

none the less. Your trying to say this would not speed up the cycle. I disagree and have cycled a tank with out live stock, with livestock, and with dirty water from another tank. Both accounts were i cycled a tank with fish and dirty water the tank cycled in about 3-4 days. Given there is some variables due to live rock and live sand on the saltwater. But i have cycled a fresh water tank with old water from another tank But in that same tank i added some dry drift wood, which had a lot of die off. The cycle goes in stages. The faster u can raise the ammonia, nitrites from decaying matter the quicker you can push the cycle. Adding water that has been used by fish and varius life will be dirty (especially when substrate is vacuumed). How is clean filtered water going to cycle as fast as dirty used water. I dont mean to argue but bottom line is used water will cycle tank faster and that is all that i was stating in previous post. Not a lot of nitrifying bacteria may not be there but other items to speed up the growth of nitrifying bacteria will.

Also in saltwater tanks to push cycle i recommend getting un-fully cured dirty live rock with a lot of die off.

You have some ideas but some "crazy" ones as well.

If you want to speed up the cycle with fish poo, die-off ... why not forget about the dirty tank water all together, it has little benefits and a lot of trouble to transport. Just give the guy a scoop of sand, a piece of live rock, a piece of filter material, ... it's much easier.

                      • thats true on the live sand and rock. all i stated was giving old water to help cycle tanks, Im all up for giving away old filter material, I will also give away chaeto soon too. You dont have to jump on my back because im just trying to help people. My point was that dirty water will cycle a tank faster you should only be arguing with me if this was not true. Not that it is hard to transport. Yes dirty filter media will be more beneficial and easier to transport than dirty water.

                        • If i was going to argue with myself i would argue about possible contaminants in the water like bubble, hair algae, ick, and aptasia particles. Not about how difficult it may be to transport water and the limited # of beneficial bacteria. Thats why i think everyone should check out any tank that there coral frags are coming from. Like i stated im not here to argue im just trying to provide help and ideas for those coming into the hobby. So using the helpful information provided by rage. i will correct my post that started this shenanigans.
