Collecting blennies tomorrow

Anyone had good luck catching blennies in galveston recently. I'm going collecting the next few weeks and I'm looking for a few starting points.

minnow traps at the yacht basin or causeway bait camp.
net drug along bottom sand at rock groins or pilings.

Go to the jetty in front of the Rainforest Cafe' at around 9:00pm. dip a regular net (like for bass fishing, but will small enough holes so that things won't fall out) into the water in front of one of the rocks. Pull the net against the rocks and pull up until its out of the water.

BTW, if you get shrimp in the net too, DO NOT throw them back. They are worth a good ammount of money for something from Galveston. If you don't want them, I'll take them off your hands.

I caught a ton of peppermint shrimp on the jetties. I actually didn't have much luck. I caught one that was tiny.... which made a perfect snack for my skillet fish. My girlfriend actually caught a few this past weekend that will be perfect.

My skillet eats most of mine too. I'll be there this weekend and will save them for you while on the lookout for Astroscopus y-graecum. Any particular type?

I'm out there most weekends, but molly miller, red lip, or seaweed blenny would be awesome. If I catch a stargazer I'll let you know. My 30 native is turning more into a predator tank. I'm going to be out looking for lizard fish this weekend. I might grab me up a cool killie too big for my angler and call it a day.

Man, you guys make me pissed at myself for dragging my feet on my saltwater tank... not concerned about getting zapped by a stargazer?

It's not that bad. I've been bit by those buggers quite a few times. No where near as bad as you would think.

While anyone is collecting. If anyone stumbles across a sleeper, I'll gladly make a trade. Fat sleepers, Spinycheek or bigmouth sleepers are all awesome. I really love emerald sleepers, but you can hardly tell them apart from gobies and the only ones I've found have come up in shrimp trawls.

We got a few dragonettes in Surfside last weekend. I took one home and it lasted about 10 minutes before my Sargassum fish ate all 6" of it. Caught a couple molly miller blennies that day on the beachfront.

Swam out to the 2nd sandbar with my dipnet and caught another large Sargassum fish which I gave to a friend. Saw a few Silkie's riding the waves while out there as well.

Stargazers won't blast you hard. Just keep your hands off the top of their head and you'll be ok. Torpedo's are another story all together though. When I build my next tank I'll be on the lookout for one of those.

Oh yeah,-Watch the sides of the stargazer head too, as they are venomous as well. A spiny puffer and stargazer, and I think I'll be good with this tank.

Hey Sea-Agg, Are you in SLP finding stargazers? I was just gonna go by Cheeseburger's boat or Ricky's and ask one of em to hold one for me when they catch one in live bait. Ricky had one of the largest Mantis Shrimp I'd ever seen (8") in his live well, but you gotta be crazy to keep one of those.

No Stargazers yet. I found a few last year on Pelican Island at night. I need to go talk to the bait shop guys as well. Have you had luck buying them from baitshop people? I went to smithy's last year but they seemed totally uninterested.

yeah... molly millers are not a fish for coral tanks. they actually eat small shrimp and other things. They do eat algae, but really I just got one cuz they are cool.

Interesting fact, the larger ones will eat aptasia.

Mine is in a native tank with no corals. The only blenny I will put in a reef tank is a tail spot blenny (E. stigmatura). Nearly every other blenny, including lawnmower blennies, only eat algae when they are small (similar situation to plecos). When they get bigger they eat meaty foods, and are just an ugly fish in your tank. Tail spot blennies stay small, are not aggressive, and eat algae all their lives.
