city pets live rock is expensive, get a decent percentage of "dead" rock and then use a couple of pieces of live rock to seed it. The ATC refractometers are 22.99 on amazon right now. Pretty good deal. Get some dead rock and a few pieces of live rock to seed the rest. You may want to get on the salt group buy if you are mixing your own saltwater. otherwise pre -mixed and distilled for top off. I like the dry rock they have on reefcleaners.org and it has free shipping.
I would go with live rock. If you have time, drop by this weekend ill show you some of my reef tanks. Just broke a tank down so have some nice established live rock for sale. Lots of pods, brittle stars etc.
This is an ADA 5 gallon tank with par 38 leds that sits on my desk. Aquaclear 70 for flow. Few pieces of live rock. Nothing fancy, just like this tank a lot. Has my prized Kenya tree. Several mushrooms, Cabbage coral, green star polyps, waving hand anthelia, neon green nepthea and some random zoas. Large Brittle star and a few hitchhiker crabs, along with my huge sebae clown.
