Its not a perfect cycle, but it kick starts it faster. We have used it in a tank hard cycling with fish, it can do it if the bioload is low and you dose daily and water change when you absolutely have to. It takes a much shorter time. We use it on all our tanks now, at start up and never have any huge issues usuallyIn the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

I'm worried about flow now, we have a maxi-jet 400 which in circulation mode puts out 500gph flow rate. I wonder if that's a bit too much for a 20 long. Sand gets blown around to a point there are bare spots. Should I down grade to a smaller pump?

Reefs are usually recommended 20x their volume per hour, so maybe angling it a bit differently or building a larger lr pile to direct and diffuse the force?

I think I built my answer. I put a dimmer switch in an electrical box and cut up an old extension cord. Wired it up and tested it on a fan. Wasn't sure a dimmer switch would work on a motor load as there are specific dimmer switches for ceiling fans that would have worked. So far it works. Can't wait to get home and test it out.
