If you want to go salt on your first tank, wait for a petco sale, get a 40 breeder(or buy one from rico for 25 or 40$), then turn the 10g into the refugium. You will need to top off a 10g reef about every day. The 40 you should be able to leave it alone for 3 days. You do not really need a skimmer. I ran a 125g for 3 years and it has had a skimmer for about 8 months of its existance. I never had some mass algae outbreak. You do not need live sand, by dry substrate and let it become live. Fine liverock. People sell it on the forums for 2-3$ per lb regularly. I can tell you how to make a 40g reef with water, equipment and all for a couple hundred $. It is a lot to type tho.
