Lurk the forums, there are a lot of people hoarding LR or post up a WTB. Normally go for about $1 a lb.

You do not need top of the line equipment to have a nice tank.

          i can attest to that.

Live rock from an established tank helps.

          Skimmer is optional

On a 10 gallon. Not worth it.

I have a 200 gallon cube. No skimmer. No reactors.

Just wet dry and filter sock.

But i used live rock from my other setups.

          Good lights is key

You are correct Omar its not required but it sure does make keeping it so much simpler. The most important thing is good water quality and params and light fixture. But that also all depends on types of corals. Most zoas and leathers you can get away with lower water quality and cheap lights. Once you get into LPS and SPS those are very important.

Different specifics would have different needs.

eklikewhoa, do you not see the pattern here?
Once you explain your experience fully, it's helpful.
It's your earlier comment that could have lead the new people astray.
                Do you not remember this:

If the rest of us had not chimed in, the story could have stopped right there. The guy would have taken that as the gospel, go try and can easily failed.

Start with a bigger tank for more stability but if you want to just get your feet wet I suggets MJ's equipment list. I would add a sump though to get more water volume and the ability to add a skimmer in the future.

Get a biocube 14, just add water, sand and rocks. Http://www.oceanicsystems.com/products/biocube.php

Everyone is giving you good info. But everyone has a slightly different take based on their experiences. But for the most part everyone agrees that you really should do a larger tank especially for your first go just makes life easier. But in the end it doesnt matter what we say you can do whatever you want to do. I know me for sure want to help you make the right choices so you dont waste time, money, and life.

It depends if like you said you are only doing softies then you are probably fine with a nano because they arent as picky. But if you want LPS and nice corals then yes I would personally start with a 30G and sump/fuge.
