What is the best way to keep them "alive" when they are out of the tank and how long can they sit outside the tank?? I brought a complete rr setup this past weekend but haven't had time to put everything together due to cleaning up the equipment and work.

The bacteria will start to die off after 6 hours. The anaerobic bacteria dies when it contacts oxygen. Killing that is unavoidable. I bought a whole setup and let my sanded sit for a couple days before I put it back in the tank. My mini cycle took about a week. I would not leave the liverock out of the water for long at all. Sponges can die easy. Best to have them submerged in circulating water.
