  • question about lighting for my sw tank

    ok, i am afraid my light i have on my 10g wont be sufficient for what i want to do.

    my first question is;

    can you have to much light on a sw coral tank?

    i want to get a 10"x10" led light that has 180 1watt leds.

    thats 18 watts per gallon.
    is that to much?

    it produces no heat.

    lmk what yall think.

    also, if this is viable, what can i grow with this light?

    If this is that HD light I read in another thread then you can't expect the whole listed 180w to be usable lighting nor will it all be directed into the tank. Also these are simple projection(can't think of the term used) LEDs which are meant to light up the path for our eyes with probably zero consideration of sustaining life form so they are most likely barely usuable for what you are wanting to do. Only one way to find out and prove wrong though.... Do it and post pictures!

    Too much lighting is not a problem with it is a bit of a hassle, you have to keep in mind that the tank whatever coral is coming from and then acclimate it to your lighting cause if not they will bleach and nobody likes looking at bleach coral. I would test it out, buy a frag or two from CP, place one down low and one up high near the light and see how they fair in a few weeks. If they all bleach then it's a good amount of lighting, if they get leggy or start to reach upwards then it's not enough. If they die... well it could have been anything.

      Aight I'll try it.

      Can I just add a frag to the tank as soon as it's setup?
