Does anyone know if I have to get the upgrade kit for every MP I have for them to communicate as one?

They talk to each other fine. But I can't do all the special new modes.Comment

For what want you do the mp40w is all you need.
If you want to upgrade to the ES then you need to do it on both mp40ws to use all the new functions on the ES.I ate my fish that died.
