  • What size return pump

Just curious on what size return pump everyone thinks would be best to use.
My tank is 65gallons 36"x18"x24" the stand puts the return at around 6'
I'm thinking of going with a mag 9.5 but thinking I might need to go with a mag 12 what do yall think about it

Depends on what you will be using for circulation otherwise.

I like 5x tank volume per hour turnover through wet/dry in my tanks. A Mag 5 or Eheim 1260 should be plenty for a 65g but a Mag 9 will definitely get the job done.

I've got 2 off brand powerheads (like koralias) that push about 1100 gph I believe right now I'm using a Rio 2100

I persoanlly like to run a slow flow rate through the sump to allow maximum contact time, normally run reactors and skimmer off the sump so it gives them adequate time to work.

Use the powerheads to keep water circulated in the main display and to keep nutrients in the column for the overflow to bring down to the other filters.

The mag 9.5 might be a good choice to minimize the amount of pumps you have running in there which would decrease heat build up and you coul Tee off and use the same pump to run reactors and such.

I don't have much heat in my tank so what I have may work just fine for now then and I can use the money to swap my live sand instead

What size is your overflow drain? If you are using 1" drain, you cannot go with nothing bigger than 600 gph without modifications (T's)

Mag 5 or eheim 1260 gets my vote.

                  I have a 55g I'm running a 1250 on.

Less flow = less noise and no bubbles in the display.

looks like a 1" drain. I have almost the same tank and i'm running a 1260 with a T for reduce the flow, as Thai said "Less flow = less noise". I think your best cost choice is a mag5 or an eheim 2000.
