  • Live Sand?

I have a question, last time i went to Florida i stold a 5G bucket of white sand from the beach, i have had it in a cool dark place but its been closed since the last week of August. my question is would that still be good sand to start a salty tank. the sand is cover by salt water adn once in a while i do shake the bucket.

Lol, I'm sure it smells nice too.

    Personally, I wouldn't use it.

I think LS and LR is over rated.

In my experience it's been more of a pest than anything.

With that said, I would think most things that were "live" about your sand ain't live no more.

I would be more worried about the size of the grains. They maybe too light and a vortech is just gonna stray it everywhere.

if you say LR is over rated then what should be used instead of it?

Same things used in a FW tank.

I've cycled a SW rank with fish food before.

I've seen many hermit crabs and snails survive a cycle also.

so your telling me that i dont need LR to have a salt water tank? nor live sand or crushed coral for substrate? i want to start with jsut fish and then maybe easy corals.

You don't need live sand of live rock.

              You can use dead rock.

You can do a bare bottom tank.

Some people use cutting board for a clean looking bottom.

I prefer the look of sand.

                  Re: Live Sand?

In my experience even with sand, gobies will take a hole in the live rock anyway. You can go without both, frag tanks are often bare on both, but conversely also have more expensive, oversized filtration. If it's a fish only scenario, maybe not so much, i think it'd be cruel to keep a shrimp and goby without somewhere to hide though, they need their privacy!

i have 4 tanks that i can use for it.

                    1-10
                    2-29
                    1-20L

when i bought my 75G the guy gave me some of his rock, Dry rock which is about 10lbs i would say, i have weighted them. i wantt o do a fish only mainly 2 clowns a goby and a shrimp as everyone has told me o go with a pistol shrimp/watchman goby combo. and maybe something else maybe a pair of damsels.

i think its to much live stock for the 10g and and my lighting would fit the 20 or 29s since it would be my 1st salt i dont want to go over board and i been plaing this for about 9months now but it has been crazy lateley and things are getting better now. My father passed in October and in Novemeber my better half was diagnose with Cancer so time and money had been a factor.

Mandarin needs a well established tank it feeds of of pods you may be able to get one and put it in a breeder basket and try to get it to eat frozen foods
