Fishcrazy...you may be able to just use a generous amount of vinegar to remove the stains. I haven't tried it, but learned that it works in my chemistry class. Something about the acetic acid (vinegar) bonds w/ the calcium ions which ultimately breaks down the molecular structure of the stain. So after letting the acid sit on the stain (whether thru soaking or wiping a few times), you should be able to just wipe and rinse clean. Or at best, use a razor. I would have tried it by now but none of my 15 tanks aren't stained that much.
When I worked at a fish store in Florida, we had the monthly chore of cleaning each of our tank's (we were all responsible for 2 racks of tanks) glass tops. The system that worked best for us with such a large number of glass tops was fill a "bucket" (okay, trash can on wheels...) with luke-warm water, let it sit for a couple minutes, and then scrape the hard water stains off with a razor blade. Good as new! Just wanted to add that. :)
I still do my glass tops at home about every month or so this way.

i like to rebuild them on my 125 gal i removed the wood grain sticker off the trim and then i put a high gloss shine on it next i'm removing all the hard water stains and scatches on the glass
What do you use to remove the scratches? I have few scratches on the exterior of a tank I'd like to make disappear.
Reasoning with some people is like trying to nail jello to a wall...
how bad are the scratches can you fell them with your fingernail if not then Cerium oxide, felt bob, and a drill if you want i am going to be ordering some soon i could sale or trade you a little for you job
They aren't very deep so I'd like to try. I do have a drill and I'm sure I can get the felt attachment so if you will have some to spare I'll buy/trade you some.
