    oh yeah inwood too!

aquazoo wants like $4 a pound, i found out the embarassing way.
Hi.  Thanks for this info.  Maybe we'll check them out before buying at Aqua Zoo.  Where the heck is inwood?  lol  I better open up mapquest.  hahaha   From exit 20 on 45 we go out about five miles on 646 to get to where we live in Dickinson.  Everything in north Houston is kind of far, but we don't mind going for a great deal on something we want or need.

By the way, I did a 20% water change on my big tank yesterday with the 50' Python.  It worked great.  We ended up hunting that down and found it day before yesterday at Aquarium World.  Shannon from Aqua World told me to do it after she tested my water because we needed to put ammonia in the tank to help it cycle.  I'm new to all this and confused as heck.  I for sure need to do more reading.  My husband has been doing it, but I need to learn because he may be going off to Iraq for a year pretty soon.....

Oops....... forgot to mention.  We had treated our water to get rid of ammonia.  Our tap water has ammonia in it, and this is why she told me to do a 20% water change..... Make sense?  :)

        Re: Texas Holey Rock ????

so you added ammonia to induce cycling and now removing it with a w/c?

aquazoo told me either $2.99-3.99, at sunnys all the pieces were the cheap price and think its even labeled with the weight and price per lb. who did you speak to? i have seen the big ones for sale at sunny's and similar at aquazoo would have been double or even triple. i guess it depends on the person.

My husband is not sure who he talked to at Sunny's.  Hubby was just pissed at the price of the nice looking holey rock...  It was his first time ever in there and he drove a long way in the bad storm today.  Even floated through an intersection to get there.  Bummer......

As for as the ammonia in my tank..... Okay, here is the deal.  We treated the water to get rid of ammonia because we just didn't know any better.  Shannon tested our water and said it needed to have ammonia in it.  Well..... our tap water has ammonia in it, so Shannon said to take out 20% of the water and put in water from our tap to add ammonia to the tank.  Make sense now?  lol

We bought approx. 40 ghost shrimp and put them in.  We have about 20 left and they've been in there several days now.  With the shrimp a little fish was in the bag with them.  It survived and is swimming happily around.  The tank came with a little cat fish.  We didn't know.  It survived the tank being emptied from the people we bought it from, the tank getting cleaned and refilled.  It is shy, but we see it every day for a second or three.......  Be nice, Be patient...... I'm a newbie and taking advice from this list as well as from Shannon at Aqua Zoo.

                Re: Texas Holey Rock ????

J, sorry to hear about your experience yesterday.  Yes, it was an ugly day yesterday!!!!!

Shannon at AquaZoo is a nice gal.  Met her for the first time about 2 weeks ago after visiting one of my offices down in Clear Lake.  I've seen the holey rock at Inwood (290 off Antoine I think), Fish Ranch II (59 near Sharpstown), Aquarium Environments (Rice University area where I got my holey rock) and AquaZoo.

The pieces at AquaZoo are really nice.  Maybe you can negotiate a lower price with Shannon.  What I liked about their pieces was the bottom's were cut to keep the piece from falling over.  I paid good $$$$ to have my largest pieces cut level.  I didn't need them falling over in my 180g glass tank.

Since you're cycling your tank, yes, you do need to have some ammonia in there.  I usually throw a few inexpensive fish in the tank to get the cycle going.  I also add a bacteria based liquid to help.  Can't remember the name...something like Bacterplus.  It's good bacteria to help get the cycle going.

Don't overfeed, but feed what they'll eat in 2-3 minutes.  This gets the fish to excrete ammonia and poop.  You may see your water get cloudy.........that's normal.   After about 2 weeks I do a 25%-30% water change.  Don't forget to add your declorinator.  I see you got a python.......good move!

Hope  this info helps you.  If you need help, just let us know.

                  Re: Texas Holey Rock ????

                  Hi Ron,

I appreciate the note and information.  My husband called Aquarium Environments this morning and they informed us that they do not sell holey rock to the public.  You must be a special or commercial customer huh?  The referred us to their retail store, Village Tropical Fish.  We have been there and were not impressed with the selection of holey rock.  Looks like we will end up at the Aqua Zoo for this purchase.  You make a good point about the bottoms of the rock at Aqua Zoo.  I'm wondering..... do you put anything in the bottom of your tank to put the holey rock on?  Any kind of padding of some kind or do you just set the rock straight into the tank on the gravel?  Just want to make sure I do everything right.

I really like Shannon at Aqua Zoo.  Both times we've been in there she has been very helpful and answered our questions.  It was a misunderstanding on my end when I treated the water for ammonia instead of letting it spike.  I have never had a tank of 20 gallons.  I am feeling pretty scared to buy nice fish for the 110 gallon tank until Shannon gives me the thumbs up.

I really appreciate this forum.  Ya'll have been very helpful.  Thank you all!!!!!

Oops..... I meant to say that I never had a tank over 20 gallons until now.  The 110 is very new to me.  That'll teach me to review my message before sending!  :)

                      Re: Texas Holey Rock ????

A lot of people use the light diffuesers sold at home improvement stores, called egg crate, under big rocks in their aquariums. It helps to spread the weight out and keep the rocks from shifting.

nope - I sit it right on top of the glass (I don't have any substrate in my tanks)

In one tank, I have a tall piece that I kinda prop up against two shorter pieces tho.

So wait, to quickly change the subject, there's a catfish that survived all of that?? Wow! That's great! Do you know what kind?

And keep us posted on the search for the holey rock. Good luck!  :)

                            Hi Ellen.....

Please pardon my ignorance, but I just went to Home Depot and Lowe's websites and did searches for both egg crate, eggcrate and light diffueser and light diffuser.  I can't find anything like what you are mentioning.  If you have any other suggestions, please let me know.  Thank you very much......

I have gravel in my tank.  Should I then move the gravel so that the rock sits right on the tank glass then?

                              Thanks!
