  • Looking for a odd size setup: Around 36" x 18" x 20" (give or take in height)

I have been trying to find a setup with a tank the same dimensions of a regular 75g, but only 3' long instead of 4'. I saw a 68g with the right footprint (36" x 18") at Fish Ranch II, but it was too tall. Since I want this tank to be a planted tank, taller tanks can be a problem when it comes to light penetration all the way to the bottom of the tank.

I've asked a LFS to look into ordering me a tank of this size, but I'm not hearing back about it. In addition to the tank itself, I want an oak or cherry (not pine, not black) cabinet and canopy to match.

I want to switch out my 29g for this new setup, but I was hoping to get something a little smaller than my 75g. I want the 18" width because I find it much easier to work with. Plus, I want to put 4 bulb TEK lights on it which is too wide for 12" width.

Does anyone know where I could go to get a setup like this? Does anyone have anything like this they'd like to part with? Or should I just give up and go with a 75g?
    Vicki

Doesn't a 40g breeder have the 36" x 18" dimensions? It's a favorite of mine for planted tanks because it's wide yet short.

      40 gal breeder or a 50 gal

There was a nice rimless Oceanic tank @ HAW - with the same footprint

Thank you for the link! The 50g would be perfect (36 x 18 x 18). But then to find a cabinet/canopy to go with it.

I'm an oddball and not into the rimless look. I looked at HAW, but most of what they had were the more modern styles.

Here's a picture of my 75g (excuse the plant mess; I was just setting it up and everything is simply thrown in). The cabinet and canopy is made by DFW which I was told is a manufacturer in (can you guess by the name?) the Dallas/Fort Worth area. It's very similar to Oceanic, but I actually like it better.

Where can I get a setup exactly like this, but only 3' wide instead of 4' wide?

The 36 x 18 foot print gives you the following tanks.

          13" Tall = 30 Gallon
          17" Tall = 40 gallon
          21" Tall = 58 gallon
          25" Tall = 68 gallon

          I hope this helps.

Thanks for the measurements. I think the 58g would be ideal. That's the size the LFS was supposed to be checking on for me.

Maybe I could reverse engineer this. If I could find out how to contact DFW, I could see if they make a cabinet/canopy for this size. If so, then they'd just have to tell me who they distribute to in this area. Getting the tank itself shouldn't be as difficult.

Aquarium World had an older 58 gallon the last time I was in there a few days ago. Don't remember the price on it but it was the older Oceanic Oak trim.

Complexity -- problem is that the 58 is no longer a tank that Oceanic makes. They stopped making it for the 70g which is 25" tall.
It was found by many aquarium manufactures that people didnt like the small window in front and wanted bigger tanks.

A suggestion would be to look on craigslist which I have seen a TON of 58's over the year come and go. They sell cheaply and I have seen some setup's with a ton of cool things on them for almost next to nothing in cost.

                Just my 2.3cents.

Thanks for the suggestions! I think my biggest problem is getting the cabinet and canopy. I'm too specific in what I want which is making it difficult. However, I might have a source for it. I should know next week. Mzungu is going to see if she can order it for me. If DFW makes that size of stand and canopy, then I'll finally be all set. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
