  • Free Fish and plants

I'm redoing my tank and need to find a home for my Large Mouth Bass (55g or larger and not the dinner table :)
He is about 8 to 9" long.
I also have some extra Narrow Leaf Sag up for grabs or I wouldn't mind trading for just about anything.
I live on the NW side of Houston

What fish are you looking to put in your tank when the bass is out?

                      Re: Free Fish and plants

Right now I'm eyeballing a mix of tetras with some shrimp. I like the idea of having some sort of ecosystem going. My bass would only allow himself and no others. I was getting bored of the isolation.
                      Any suggestions?

I cant suggest anything, ive always impulse bought something and had to figure out where im going to put it.
I like the Angels and thats mainly what i have. Id get some Discus if i had the  room and the money.

                          Re: Free Fish and plants

I've always had native texas fish, not till the last couple days did I even know what a discus was. The sort of look mean but I've seen them with tetras, are these fish non-aggressive? I've also seen them priced at $40, what makes these fish so special? Just curious to learn more about this hobby, even though I've had tanks for over 20 years, I'm still like a newbe

                            Re: Free Fish and plants

I believe theyre non-aggressive, although they may be classed as semi-aggressive. If it fits in their mouth then its at risk.
You can get different types of Discus, theyre not all at the $40 mark. You can pick some up for around $10-$15 when theyre small.
Have you looked at the Angelfish? They are also great looking fish but generally not as expensive as the Discus.
I have some 4" Angels in with some young male guppies and they dont bother them at all.
Just buy something big to be the main focus of the tank, some smaller schooling fish to watch swim, some bottom feeders like loaches/corys, and a pleco to keep your glass clean.

Sounds like a good game plan, will look into those fish you mentioned.
