I had the same idea a few months ago and got started with a total of 12 beautiful, young, yellow labs from various "suppliers". Now, about 6 months later I still have my original 12 plus fry and fry and fry and fry.....
I'd love to sell you some of my original breeders....I'll even go as far as giving you a guaranty that you'll have fry in a few weeks! I'll sell a breeder trio (one mail, two females) for $30. That's about what I paid with shipping, etc. DOA guaranty as well....if you pick them up. ) Can't get much better than that if you are serious about breeding.
I was looking for my camera...and found it but batteries are dead. Sorry, don't have pic but I'm sure you will not be disappointed!
I am on the west side of town, Barker Cypress/Clay.

17 gallon - Threadfin rainbows and corys lightly planted

Yes, the yellow labs are cichlids and are one of the more peaceful ones. But be careful, just because they are cichlids doesn't mean they can be mixed with any other cichlid. Here is a great website that can help you decide what to do with your new cichlid-to-be-tank http://www.cichlid-forum.com/article...cutter_75g.php
.....on the other hand, I have my yellow labs in a 135 gal with electric blue ahlis, which I learnt after the fact, is a big no-no. But in my case, they get along just fine and I guess I got the conditions to the point where both species are thriving.....and I got proof! Hundreds and hundreds of little ones swimming around in tanks scattered all over my house!

The cichlid names give me a headache. I wish they could just call them blue/yellow, etc... I will never learn all of those names.
Nonetheless thank you for pointing me to a terrific wealth of cichlid info.

I have three, one male, two females that I have lost interest in. I was going to bring them to the auction but if you would like them, they are $20. They haven't bred yet but I think they are just a little stressed. I have a few noncompatable species in my tank and I'm trying to switch to a few big fish instead of a small, lots-o-fish tank. I'll try and get pictures of them.College = fishless for now. Vicarious living!
