  • WTB nano saltwater tank

I'm going to try my hand at saltwater for the first time in 5 years.
I need a nano tank or small tank.

If anyone has one, I have cash in hand. (:
Or, if you know where to buy one at a reasonable price, I would really appreciate it.

    Kind Regards,
    Alexa

I've been told that the larger a saltwater tank is, the more stable the water chemestry is.    Check with the saltwater group, I'm sure they have some valuble input.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Larger bodies of water is easier to maintain and keep stable but Nano's do look cool!

Why not just get a cheap 10g and go from there?

          Re: WTB nano saltwater tank

I want to build one since most nano's aren't really reef ready.

I was thinking a 10g turned sideways so that the side is actually the front and then use something to build a false wall. Behind that wall would be the "sump" filled with rubble/algae/sponges and the massive pump I have laying around. After that I would put a nice Metal Halide fixture on it and coral that bad boy out!

oops tried to correct it, it's a 70w light

but I might be trying my hand at the 10g thing so if you want we can have a little build party and maybe Greeblies will join us Log.

                    Re: WTB nano saltwater tank

I'm down, I took some time to brainificate and came up with some pretty good ideas.

I've got a 20L to use, and I can donate a big bag of sea salt for the initial loading, plus I have spare powerheads to stir up the water and blah blah blah

After going to that fish store off of kirby/59 today I'm itching to set up something new.

Here is something I drew up of what is floating around in my head

I plan to have an auto-top off worked in which I haven't incorporated in the blueprint.

                            Re: WTB nano saltwater tank

In the saltwater hobby anything 30g or under is considered a nano.  If it were me as a first time hobbyest I wouldn't start with a nano, but that's just me.  We started out with a 135g and never had problems with water chemistry.  The little ones definitely require you to watch a little closer.

Sumps aren't really required for salt tanks.  Ideally our preference is to go with a hang on refugium.  That's what we do with our 30g.  On the other hand with our 55g we only use an Eheim and have no problem.  The other thing is you could do a hang on the back overflow and use a separate tank as the sump.

The only problem with nanos is you can't put many fish into them.  We had 3 in our 30g and that was pushing it.  If you did something like a 5g you'd be stuck with maybe a little goby and that would be it and if you went smaller the only thing you could put in it would be a shrimp.

having just a goby is awesome!!
