        Hi,

        I have heard several people say that biocube is good for saltwater and fresh water. the lights that come with it are good for corals, so i have heard.

        anyone out there have any other input on this....

        thanks

        let me know...

          I have one of the smaller oceanic biocube 8 running saltwater. There are 2 bulbs that comes with it, one is a 18watt blue actinic and the other is a 18watt 10k. The tank had zoas, blastomussa, colt coral, frogspawn, galaxia, and many more for a beginner (like myself at the time) to experiement with. It did rather well until the 10k went out after 8 months, the blue actinic went out after 15 mo--so, make sure you stock up on a backup. You have watch the bulbs though, most loose the quality after 6 months, so although it looks bright, the corals will get start reacting negatively. I think larger biocubes uses larger bulb.

          Also, I added carbon after adding a kenya tree, but eventually the kenya tree release enough stuff to kill several corals--so, with a small environment, you may not want to mix your corals if they have sweepers or use chemical warfare (like the kenya tree).

          I had raised 2 clown fish, and used regular water changes (10% weekly) that kept everything happy (before the kenya). There is a design flaw that allows stupid clowns to jump into the back filteration area, so consider making or finding some protective plastic or netting to prevent suicidal hops at the local home improvement or hobby shops. I lost one 1 year later that way, and I think a person on amazon posted a negative review on their biocube due to similar experiences.

          Currently, I started it back up and run it well with a single 18 watt 50/50 for the last 3 months. It currently has zoas, gsp, ricordea yumas, and blastomussa wellsi. (no fish). Water changes are easy enough, however, if anyone plans to add fish in any saltwater, I would highly suggest adding a protein skimmer somehow. I think modification for a protein skimmer can be difficult, though--everything just fits in the right place. Oceanic makes a very small nano skimmer for $30., but I do not believe a skimmer that small will produce any real skimmage. (perhaps read reviews.)

          But if you are on top of your water changes your corals will not have a problem.

          I would avoid some of the higher light demanding corals like stonies without a lighting upgrade. Of course, unless you know for a fact that people are growing that coral under power-compact (PC). I picked up a small acro frag but it died. I am not sure if my tank was not mature at the time but it eventually had the brown algae grow all over it--but the other corals never subcumbed to the algae.
