Anyone looking to swap some Red Cherry Shrimp? I wouldn't mind adding some genes from a different family line.

I presume to add some resiliency to the lineage?  what part of Houston are you in?  I've got a 20L of them - a mix from about 3-4 different lines already.

      Re: Gene Swap

I live in the NW side of town, but am willing to drive. I've heard its best to add juveniles. I've bought a couple adults from the pet stores but they didn't survive, while my colony is doing pretty well.
I will send a PM with my private data

          Re: Gene Swap

I would think that it's safe to say no, other then stealing foods from those plecos that are more scavenger then hunter.

If anything it's the other way around.

I have some that I could swap that have about 5 lines worth and I can trade the juvi's which I think is the best way cause the adapt to change better.

            Howdy PhilipC,

I have some from eklikewhoa his CRS are doing GREAT!  I bought 30 in from CA in April that are doing fine that I added to the dozen I had from Goliad Fish Farms.  They said last week that their cherry shrimp breed best in a tank with other livebearers.  I believe it, mine are in a 20 gallon with guppies, 4-2" albino plecos with lots of ricca.  We sold 10 juvi's at the HLA auction last weekend.  The adult females are a cherry red and juvi's are a pink color.  If you wanted to trade some juvi's I will be in Houston on June 9th, we can meet then.   If you want to trade before then like this Friday late afternoon or early evening I could meet you in Dickinson (about half way between Houston & Galveston off of I45).  409-771-3305 or ksteblei@utmb.edu later, ken

              Re: Gene Swap

Sounds like most of yall already have different lines going, I only have my single line. I started with 15 juvis back in February and now I have like 150 juvis. These things breed like roaches, its kind of fun, but I'm afraid that some additional genes should be added. I bought a couple from the new village tropical but I don't think they survived, hard to say with that many shrimp, but up till this point I haven't noticed a single shrimp death.

                  fishlady,
These shrimp are very small and should not bother most fish. Matter fact larger fish will eat them, can you tell me what you have in your tank. I will give you a few for free when I give you you plants too.

                      Fishlady,

What size tank do you have these fish in?  The Cherry Red Shrimp (CRS) adults might eat a new born guppy baby if they can catch them and your other fish might eat a few young CRS.  I thank that is all OK and should be part of your ecosystem in your tank.  Everything has more of a chance to live to maturity if you have a well planted tank.  The shrimp are loads of fun to watch with other fish in the tank.  They come out from under cover when you put food in the tank...LOL!

If you have enough light to grow live plants and can make it to Dickinson or Santa Fe area I can give you some ricca which the shrimp love to climb on and a couple CRS so you would have another gene pool to work with. later, ken

                        Islander,

Fishlady has them in a 29 gallon tank, heavily planted too, I might add. * there is a pic of it in her album.

Red Cherry. CRS = crystal red shrimp. :)

You might want to watch the Raphael cat, and the algae eaters, depending on what they are. They could snack on your shrimp when you're not watching.
