  • Looking for Rock

I am looking for some rock to finish setting up a tank. I am looking for Holey Rock but will also think about using slate and other rock for an african cichlid tank.

Or if anyone knows a particular place to find them at a good price I can even work with that.

I know it is out of the way but Aqua Zoo in Webster has some. I don't know about prices though.

        Re: Looking for Rock

The last time I checked the local rock yard would sell individual rock from their loose piles but would not break a palet for such a small sale.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

I like PhishPhreek's suggestion if your don't have your heart set on holey rock. Most LFS sell holey rock and range in price $1 to $1.50 per pound and more for "show pieces". Last time I was at Xtreme Fish (11415 Bellaire), they had a pretty big pile. Be careful though - some of their holey rock wasn't actual holey rock (you can feel the difference). Good luck with your search.

Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Come to the HAS in July auction there is always good to great pieces at the auction. Many can serve as a really nice center piece. I have gotten at least 10 really nice rocks there.

There are always a lot of nice rocks, holey and otherwise at the HAS auctions.  The next auction is July 8th if you can wait a couple of weeks.

if you're looking for slate, go to a landscaping yard. they sell it for $0.25/lb at most. sheet sandstone is even cheaper at maybe $0.09/lb

                      Re: Looking for Rock

I am looking for quite a bit, as there are a couple of tanks that will end up using it. I went to fishland yesterday and picked up some pieces I liked. They had it @ 1.19/lb but we bought alot of other stuff and they were cool and took it down to .99/lb.

Don't know if I will make the HAS auction...
