Re: Is anybody selling a FW Puffer? Or any stores in Houston

The aggressiveness varied from fish to fish with the Mbu. Sounds like gt3guru has a relatively peaceful one whereas J-WS6 was not quite to friendly to tankmates.

Not sure how we starting talking about them anyhow... Brownsnoutuk was looking for one that didn't get that big.

Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

I want an Mbu, but the biggest tank i have is a 55. I have to be able to move the tanks i have by myself, and in a car. That limits the size of tank i can have.

How is this... whenever the Mbu (or Fahaka if you would prefer) gets too big for you, you can give him to me.

if you had a tank whos minimum dimension was greater than 30 inches i'd consider loaning him to you if he out grows my tank. But I have someone interested in purchasing him who i trust will find a big enough tank.

If the offers right. A good customer from petsmart had bought one from fish r us a while back and mentioned he would like to get one for his mom. said he really wanted a 700 gallon tank and i thought HEY! perfect match. so if he comes through with a big tank and still wants Popeye its a deal.

but i'm not desperate to sell. hard to find a puffer like mine (thats in good shape, happy, friendly, FAT)

I was at fish r us today and they still look awful there.

Went to Citypets and Fishranch today. Citypets had only a mbu for $180.

Fishranch had a lineatus (sp?) for $50 but he was beaten up. They had several other puffers but nothing that i really liked.

I ended up buying a 4" green spotted puffer. Hes eating like a pig and hes very fat.

I bought the fish in a FW tank, so he/shes currently in Freshwater. Ive added some salt(regular not marine) and will continue adding salt for the next few weeks.
I just have to figure out how much salt to add per 10 gallons.

Is regular salt ok for the long run or is marine mix needed?

You will need the marine salt.

Also how much the marine salt is in LFS's.

I have not start converting mine to brackish water yet. (I need to start that switch within the next month.) This article gives some good guidance on GSPs. http://www.thepufferforum.com/forum/...otted-puffers/

I have a hydrometer, but some claim a refractometer is better. These tools help you measure the amount of salt. As for cost, I have priced it. For the amount we will be using, it is pretty economical. I can't recall the price off hand but I was thinking in the $10-15 range for more than we will need.

Re: Is anybody selling a FW Puffer? Or any stores in Houston

It's a slow process. But yes, get marine salt. I can't remember how much it runs, but I usually buy just a 5 or 10 pound bag of salt, probably around $10-$15, like fishhog said.

I have both a hydrometer(s) and a refractometer. Refractometer is much much much more accurate and easy to use. I always seem to have to deal with bubbles in my hydrometers, which leads me to have to test the SG at least 3 times to make sure. But, hydrometers run about $10 to $15 (sometimes less) while a new refractometer can be a bit more. However, I got mine used for...$15, I think.  :)

FW would have a SG of 1.00. I would raise this by .002 or so per week, just so your filter can keep up with you. Personally, my brackish tank is at about 1.015. Sea water can be from 1.020 to 1.030, SW tanks are usually kept between 1.020 and 1.025. So, for brackish you'd want to go in between. My tank's SG is a bit high, but that's my choice. You can, of course, go lower. I'd try to reach at least 1.005, preferably 1.008 to start out with.  :)
