  • WTB: Black Substrate and Java Moss/Hornwort

I'm looking for any kind of black substrate, except fore gravel, for my tank that'll contain cherry shrimps. I think my tank is only 2-3 gallon so I'm looking for about 1-4LBs of substrate. I'm also looking to buy some java moss and hornworts for my other tanks. Or any low light, easy to care for plants.

How much was the sand at Fish Ranch? Also, about how long did it take you to clean the sand?

It was 20 bucks before tax for 50 pounds, its hard to clean but what I did is divided in small amounts and I use a strainer with very small fine holes so the sand doesn't fall and clean it nice with hot water is a pain in the ***, but when I finish I love it. The display tank that Tran have in his store with the africans got the same sand I'm talking about. For cleaning with a vacuum gravel it nice cause its more heavy than sand but not like graver so you don't suck it a whole bunch like pool filter sand. Here are a couple of pics of my tank

I know that the "blasting sand" is not actually sand but welding slag, hence the reason you have to work so hard to clean it (you are removing iron). I was able to find quartz sand in black at National Pool Tile in NW Houston but of course, it is sold in 50 lb bags but you don't waste a bunch of time rinsing it. It was like rinsing carbon for my filters. http://www.nptgonline.com/nptg_natio...shes_main.html I also picked up a dirt cheap bag of small polished stone substrate that looks like miniature river stones about the size & shape of Rice Krispies.

I don't recall (been over a year ago) but I bought there so it must have been a deal, LOL I know I bought two bags for my 90g. Here's their location & number, they were really easy to deal with. BTW: My sand looks the same as it did when I put it in the tank. https://picasaweb.google.com/1162471...42157290323058

Yep, that's the stuff. Just about any color you may want & they can mix colors as well. It is primarily used as non-slip additive to epoxy for pool surfaces so it is slightly larger grain than pool filter sand.
