I think no one is positive what causes HITH but I've read it could be water quality, poor nutrition, and even carbon in filters.  Who knows but I'm just hoping he'll look better in about a month.  He's so pretty!

I dont mean to go in another direction on here, but I feel this needs to be address.

sproett please stop using windex on the glass of the fish tank. I know alot of people think that glass is a solid matter, but it is not it is a pores matter & after time the chemicals from any glass cleaner will get into your tanks water & cause you more harm then good. Just use a paper towel & a little elbow grease.

I think I forgot to say that yes, I think that you're doing all that is possible to help the spots go away. Keep the water quality good, and they should go away. If they don't seem to improve in a week, though, it might be worth looking into.

wvgdiscus-Wow, never knew that about Windex.  Luckily I use vinegar/water mixture because I don't like using chemicals around my daughter.  I just say Windex because it's a common name.  Makes me glad I don't use it around the house period.  But I'm glad you told me, never would have guessed that.

When you get a chance take a look at my Oscar's pictures in the gallery.  The only sensory pits are what looks like on the bridge of the snout, not underneath the eyes.

Mzungu, back many moons ago, most people I dealt with in the cichlid world said poor diet for a large carnivore was the issue for HITH, but like you said it right now is not something that is well known.   This is why I am recommending that a strong diet for a couple of days of protein and veggies would do the Oscar some good in case the issue has been poor diet.  I do feed my oscars about once every week a piece of zucchini cut into cubes... they eat them quickly.

I feed mine normally a combination of Hakari Medium pellets and TetraCichlid Crisps.  Crisps are half green (concentrated algae extract) and half beige (Cichlid staple). The food offers all of the Crisps benefits and a higher vegetable content ideal for top and mid-water feeding Cichlids.

The Crisps are not always easy to find as they are new on the market but they really make my Oscars show colors and look great.

The Hakari Medium Pellets (about 20) are thrown in with the food in the morning.  This way they will get a full stomach and I have yet to see them hunt or eat anything else in the aquarium.

I'm not arguing those aren't HITH, especially considering the condition he was raised in.  I'm just exploring my options.  It really doesn't matter since I'm treating him for it.  He's not acting stressed and I'm hoping in one month's time he'll be in great shape.  During all my research I've seen some nasty cases of HITH, not a pretty disease.  
I feed Omega One pellets, I really like them.  It's whole salmon, shrimp, herring, and kelp (plus vitamins/minerals).  I also have Omega One veggie rounds which is whole kelp, spirulina, various fish/eggs, and vitamins/minerals.  I've never tried those Tetra cichlid crisps, I'll keep my eye out for them next time I'm at the lfs.  They sound very cool.  I feed small amounts twice a day and they all fast once a week.

You are correct HITH isnt a nice disease :)  I have not tried Omega One but it sounds like what I am feeding mine.   All my community fish gets to eat twice a day, I dont fast at all, except when I am not home for a day, then they get to, but then again all my food is gone within 3 minutes of feeding, the two oscars take by far the most.   I am sure that in a week or two you will see improvements :)
