Take the tubing loose from your diffuser or whatever delivery system you have in the tank and hold the end of the tube under water... count the bubbles. Once you get the number of bubbles you want you should stay consistant as long as you have a good needle valve.

i am currently using a dual stage regulator with swagelok SS-SS4 metering valve so it is a good needle valve and i should have consistent flow. that method would work in a pinch but since i use an inline reactor that is stored under the tank in a closed stand i would love to be able to have a visual reference that i can mount remotely and without disassembling things. i dont get many bubbles so i like to be able to confirm that it is operating at a glance. thats a good point though, they can be thought of as redundant if you have good equipment upstream.75G Standard - High Light Planted Community Fish
