Naw, I want that Gar that was posted earlier... I figure overfilter and water changes would make up for the lack of tank space/water volume.

Partially I would think. Gars like almost non existent current. They want to be able to move slowly and and stalk until the last second. Buddy of mine used to keep them. Had to point filters at the glass to keep from disturbing them.

I was thinking about running the spray bar against the tank bottom to keep detritus from accumulating and leave the gar up top.

If that were true then most flowerhorns would be worthless. Since most flowerhorns are based on their size and hump it would be easy to get a stunted growth and large hump but it's all due to genetics and not the size of the aquarium. Many people have tried putting their flowerhorn in a very small tank in hopes of growing a larger hump and smaller body but it didn't work out so well.
