  • Wanted: freshwater Nerite snails

I have just started collecting snails in my planted tank in an algae and snail battle. I read that freshwater nerite snail will eat green spot algae. I really hate sticking my hand into the tank to scrub algae off the glass since I'm afraid of scaring my fishes.. If anyone has freshwater nerite snail for sale I'd gladly buy from them. Keeping some assassin snails right now and they seem great. I also read assassin snails don't touch nerite so it should be fine.

I work from home over most of the summer. They have been in my freshwater tank for several months. Nerites need brackish/salt to breed.

Nerites are both SW and FW they just die quicker in FW because they cannot replenish their shells since FW doesnt have the calcium carbonate in the water like SW.

thanks man. Your nerites ate all my Green Spot Algae, the Assassins are doing well too. My water is a bit soft like 4.5dH. So I put cuttlebone in the filter hoping to provide them with some calcium, don't know if I'm doing right or not.

Sounds good to me. I've heard of others using cuttlebones, although I haven't done it myself.

do you have any experience in feeding them with fishes around? My fishes are so GREEDY, every time I put a veggie stick in they'd swarm around it before my snail get anything :(

I feed most of my snails romaine lettuce... alot depends on tankmates, but snails are scavengers... they should be fine.

I have one nerrite and three ramshorn (one new one appears every month) in a densely planted tank. I didn't introduce them and have not decided how I feel about them one way or another, but my question is why are they not reproducing rapidly in the tank.

The algae seems to be mainly attracted to a rock in the tank (duno what nutrients it provides) and that is mainly where the snails chill.
The fish are Rams, Angels, Rainbows, Tetras, platys and corys.

Use Houston's hard water. No treatment (sometimes dechlorinator).

There is an abundance of food for the snails as the ramshorn get to about 3/4 of an inch in less than a month but somehow only 1 new one pops up each month

Perhaps the corydoras are eating them (the likeliest candidate in my opinion) especially newly hatched snails. Are you seeing snail eggs in the tank? It could be that they are not breeding as profusely, but once they get established they can really explode in population density. If you pluck out the larger adults you can manage their numbers to some degree. Assasins can manage them well if you ever beign to be overun with them. Assassin snails usually eat smaller snails, thus ignoring for a large part the adults given a good amount of smaller alternatives. They breed slower usually and can be well controlled with manual removal and selling the excess.
