  • Does anyone have wild caught Burundi Frontosa?

I was just curious as to if anyone knew of a place or anyone selling some wild caught burundi frontosa.  I would like to add a wild colony to my existing moba and mpimbwe colonies.  I am just not happy with the quality of the tank raised burundi available.

The market is so flooded with Tankraised Burundi, that I'm not sure they really go and collect this anymore.

I hope you do find them, they are a beautiful fish.

I hate that the same thing is starting to happen to Tropheus.  As more and more people get the fish, they dont take care of the blood lines, and cull out ones that should be culled, and do not take the responsibility to the fish to prevent inbreeding, and hybridization.

Its the nature of the beast though...

Yeah, all of my travels to LFS' around the Houston area, I don't think that I have ever seen any "wild caught" Burundis.  Seems like everyone has tank raised now days.

Like Geoff said.... I think most of your Tropheus Duboisi are coming out of Florida these days from what I have heard from the various store owners.

Re: Does anyone have wild caught Burundi Frontosa?

I read that dubs have actually been over collected in the wild so the tankraised thing was probably forced......does really suck that there is no lineage or background to any of the fish sold in the LFS's though.....like how there are so many different dubs available but they are all sold as the same thing at the LFS.

Ek is right about that, I can't even find out what mine are. All I get back is Tropheus Duboisi...No lineage....

Re: Does anyone have wild caught Burundi Frontosa?

That is one reason I try to avoid buying from any LFS.  There are just too many fish of poor quality for sale, especially african cichlids.  I see "Assorted Africans" all to often for my taste.

I will say that Alex does have quality fish, but you do have to pay a little more for them.

Yeah, I have a few fish out of those "Assorted Africans" tanks that are really nice looking fish, but I can't identify them.  What's really bad is you are starting to see hybrids being sold in those tanks and nobody has a clue what they are.

Next thing you know, you are going to start seeing "Assorted Tropheus - 3 for $25"....LOL!!!!

You already have people who careless about the hybrids and there are even some that like the looks of Hybrid trophs.......that there is what starts it and when there is a market for it all goes to $hit.

Re: Does anyone have wild caught Burundi Frontosa?

My Duboisi 10 years ago, where all wild caught Karilani Island.  Then over time, as no more wild caught Kariliani Island was availible, because at the time, it was the craze to get Masawa and Halembe because people wanted the yellow stripes.

So about 4 years ago, I had to start keeping my own F1's to add to my groups, and pick up Kariliani Strays in Alex's store or when he placed an order, he would tell me that ACA has some culled males from a Karliaini Order that they need to get rid of, and I would take them.

My colony right now is a mixture of wild caught and my own f1's with 2 of them tankraised.  My fry have to sold as tankraised, because though I can guarantee which female spit, I have 3 dominant males that get "action" and are both wild and F1.

So, what does all this tell you..my fry are Kariliani Island.  I know that for sure.

AS for Floridia pondraised, most likely they are mixtures of Brurundi, and Kigoma, and Maswa.  Burundi Farms has a large pondraised operation, that many Florida Farms get their breeding stock from.  All you can hope is that the people who have run those Florida Farms have kept their stock pure.

If those fish came from Seagrest Farms or EkkWill most like they did a piss poor job.  They just dont care about that kind of stuff. All they care about is the people who want the little poka-dot fish.

hmmmm it looks like they will take several generations to get back to really good quality, but at least there is less strain on native populations. both a good side and a bad.

Those are Burundi. Zambians are much bluer and have a different appearance overall.
