I don't think it's the volume of the tank rather the foot print I the tank matters more. That foot print should be ok with one colony.

Oh ok so they prefer a longer tank as opposed to a taller one?

              Yes.

Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

I want to get into trophs but have to admit I'm really skeptical due to the horror stories that I have heard

Best bet is to go to someone's house, check out their set up and try to mimic it and absorb as much knowledge about keeping them as possible. It's not that hard. Just gotta be prepared. Always have some metro or clout on hand in case you do everything right and the fish still bloat. That was my second mistake. My first mistake was in January a few years back, I was heading to church but needed to do my water change. Turned water on and immediately filled my buckets up. Water was freezing cold. Poured into tank, bucket after bucket and when I got back, over half my colony was dead. The rest were extremely stressed. Looked at the thermometer and water was 60 degrees. Fish got back to normal but had one or two that got bloated and without anything to treat, I lost fish after fish. Ended up losing about 20 fish. Not having metro was my second mistake. As long as you do preventative maintenance you should be fine.
