  • Daphnia Culture?

Does anyone on here have a colony of daphnia that I can get a culture from? I've seen them on Aquabid for like $15.00 but IMO that's way too much for something that might end up dying anyway...I have read they are very finicky... Anyway, if anyone would like to share some daphnia with me, please PM me! I will be at the GHAC meeting next Friday and can get them then! I would really like to develop a colony and feed them to my fishies! It would be cool to see a culture go into the raffle at the meeting too! I had them years ago and I loved how my fish would chase them all over the tank! OK, let me know what y'all have!

    Thanks guys!

    Re: Daphnia Culture?

Just FYI, Ken and Mark (islander here on HFB) usually bring a few cultures with green water to the auctions, be it HAS or HLA. So, if you can wait until November, you can get some at the HAS auction!

also look at the different ways of culturing them. there is a way that doesnt require green water but yeast instead, its on aquaticplantcentral.com if i remmember correctly.

It's not me, it's the camera!

Just wanted to include a picture of what a daphnia looked like. They're kinda cute, IMO.

My appologies for introducing miroworms to a daphia thread....................but

Anyone happen to know where I can get a microworm culture?

Just had my first batch of Covict fry. Actually, it is my first experience with egglayers.

                        Re: Daphnia Culture?

On Aquabid.com there are several cultures that are listed as ready to start feeding from and I think they have free shipping too! If you just got a sample from someone, I think it would take several weeks to get enough to start feeding from it... I have raised Microworms and your best friend will become Instant Mashed Potatoes and white paper towels!! They really stink though...but they are really good for your fish!!! Good luck!!!

I've been told that if you tape a dime store mignifying glass over your camera lense you can get some fantastic close ups.... 8O
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

                            Howdy Rebekah,

The Daphia cultures are pretty easy but you need to keep several batches going incase they crash and make sure your friends have some in case you loose them all.  This is a pretty hardy daphnia we have going that first came from PhishPheek.  We raise ours in 5 gallon buckets and harvest some about once a week when we change the water to fresh green water.  I can hook you up with some the next time we meet, maybe at the HAS Auction on Nov. 4th. later, ken/mark

                              Re: Daphnia Culture?

COOL!! Yeah, when I had them before, I had them in a big rubbermaid container with a full-spectrum light over them to keep the green water up. I really enjoyed them because I never really had to worry about them and all I had to do was scoop some out with a brine shrimp net and feed them to the fish after they were established. My fish loved it LOL!

I'm still undecided on whether or not I'm going to the HAS auction. I'll have to see what's going on that weekend with my horse training. I'll know when it gets closer to that time though and PM you!
