  • LFS in Greater Houston Area

I live in SE Texas, planning on making a tour of some LFS's in the Houston area. Could I get some suggestions?
    Thanks

Re: LFS in Greater Houston Area

TommyB,  Can you give us a small hint on what you are going to be looking for and then we can prolly give you a better list of exact places we would recommend for you.

The Following places are my suggestions but they range highly on what you are looking for.

City Pets - because most of everything they carry is cheap, when it comes to the fish department.  Dry goods and fish.  Selection in Cichlids not near as nice as other places.
Fish Ranch II -  They have a good selection of Cichlids.  Good pricing on tanks if you are looking for tanks.
Ultimate Fish - Excellent selection of the more hard to find cichlids.
Mike's Trophical Fish and Pets... because you just want to say you have been there...  Its Mike.. what else can be said :)
Fishland - Good pricing..  some excellent pricing on some of his drygoods...  Good pricing on Tanks and Stands.

Listen to the other peoples suggestions..  :)

I like Fish Ranch near 59 and Bellaire. They have a huge selection of freshwater and saltwater. And the prices are great. The folks that work there are really helpful, too.
Aquarium World near 290 and Beltway 8 is fun to visit with a large aquarium and ponds with bridges, but expensive.
Have fun in the Big H!

Mike's.....Zulaab's comment kinda sums it up
FishRanchII....Nice people there, sometimes you find those uber rare stuff...lots of tetras and "Nano" tank stuff
Fish Gallery..... Lots of tetras, saltwater selection is decent and the giant 2k gallon tank(?) is pretty cool.
City Pets..... cheap stuff all around which most of the time is comparable to online prices, SW is pretty decent and the planted displays are nice
T&T fish and reptile.... REALLY nice SW frag tank as well as the other SW tanks, grab tank Petro/trophs and random Tangayikan cichlids
All About Fish..... Nice SW/reef stuff...offers custom Acrylic tanks/sumps
        Fishland....Decent SW stuff
        Ultimate fish.....Tanganyikan super store!!!
Aquarium World......eh...overpriced but the ponds are cool, both saltwater and koi

Thanks a lot, the higest % of our fish are Frontosa, we have a few CA/SA. Just going to kick tires so to speak and go to a few good eateries :!: We would be interested in a Oceanic 150/180 if the price was right. Thanks again

Re: LFS in Greater Houston Area

Oh god, T & T fish and reptile is a horrible place! They have a nice saltwater section, but they have sick fish a lot ofthe time. The lighting in that place gives you headaches. Their poor reptiles are always half-dead. I try not to give that place any of my business - and it is right down the street from me...

Fish Ranch used to be nice, I haven't been their in a while. I've seen lots of sick fishin there though. They don't seem keep their labeling updated very much. It is worth checking out though.

Fishland has healthy animals and great service. Pretty small though.

Re: LFS in Greater Houston Area

Fish Ranch is under new ownership and management. The tanks and fish look really nice. I think the previous owner quit putting money and time into the store when he decided to sell it. Makes sense, I guess, from a business standpoint. But check the store out again and see what you think.

Re: LFS in Greater Houston Area

I agree, Fish RanchII has picked up since then and the switching of owners was a long process.....

FishLand has sick fish too, last time I was there which wasn't long ago most all the livebearers look really ragged.
T&T I don't look at the reptiles so I wouldn't know but everything else there look to be decent as far as the FW went.
