  • Some help from the great people at the Box?

So two of my best friends live in Houston (Shanadoah area to be exact) and they're living with her parents right now because they're trying to get their lives in order. She's having a whole lot of medical problems right now and he can't find a good job to support them both right now. They're both extremely depressed right now because they're having to depend on her parents and I was talking to my friend Steve and he used to maintain a 55 gal saltwater tank that was absolutely beautiful. Well his ex tore it down and sold it for drug money while he was out of town on business one weekend. That was about a year ago and the closest thing he's had to a fish tank since then is some Sea Monkeys.

They're amazing people and they're just down on their luck right now, so I was wondering if y'all could help me out a little. Steve wants a 10 gal tank for just a couple fresh water fish so he has something to take care of and watch to pull him out of this depression he has.

I was wondering if anyone had a VERY cheap (or free :) ) 10 gal they would like to give up somewhere. Also, if someone had just some small community fish they needed to thin the herd of.

Just let me know. These are amazing people and I would do anything for them so if there are any suggestions or offers, please let me know.

Thanks so much Boxers : )  Y'all are a group of really good people so I figured I would give it a shot and reach out for some help from y'all.

10 gal tanks @ petsmart is only 10 bucks...   i got 3 very shy cories i want to get rid of from my 10g... give me more details... did have a nice school of 14 zebra danios, half of them are the long fins, but all of them are gone but 2 due to my lazyness while doing water change with python vac, they all got sucked away... sigh

How big do they get? Will they outgrow the 10 gal? That would be perfect!!

they can get up to about 3-4 inches...if you don't have alot of them you could keep about 3 to 4 in a 10......

Once they are big they will need something bigger than a 10.. but by then hopefully he/she will have enough money together to give them a bigger tank to live in.  In about a years time they will be ready to breed and will want about a 40g tank minimum.  They are colony fish which means everyone will help out raising the young..  A very fun cichlid to own I believe

I am in NE (more north than east just below north beltway near IAH) houston and have a bunch of fancy guppies I could pass on for free... maybe like 10 or so of them?
They wouldn't work with the brichari but they are here if you want.  I know what it feels like to get a positive boost from fish.  Believe me...through my bad back that they are fighting to get the surgery apporved as soon as possible, my fish and all of my other animals have kept me sane ;-)

fishlady, since we're starting from scratch, I'm going to take dblondfemme up on her offer for the guppies to kick start the filter and then I'll take the guppies and he can get some Brichari from you, does that sound okay?

Update on what all I've got right now...

NewAquaMom is providing the 10 gallon tank and she MIGHT have a filter for us.

We still need hood/lights, gravel, and a heater - then he'll be set!

Thanks so much to everyone that has offered to help, as dblond said, fish can do a lot - I know it did for me after a really horrible break up of mine last year.

I knew I could count on the awesome people at the Box :)

i do have some bigger then pea size gravel that i used to use for my turtle tank, but its too messy to clean, so i kept it naked bottom now... and also a ugf for a 10g that was suppost to be used for feeders only tank, which i end up not having enough space in the house for it...   so how about this, 3 cories, 2 zebra danio (they do better in a group of 6+ tho), the gravel and the ugf in exchange for 3 bottles of NO FEAR energy drink...
