    Re: leaking fish tank

I've did the same thing imagirlgeek did on a 135g and 30g. You might as well go ahead and redo the whole tank. Why take a risk that the old silicone will hold up or not? After I resealed them, after waiting about 1 or 2 days, I filled it up with water outside and let it sit for a day to see if it leaked.

When I was putting the silicone on, I first put a thin layer on and then a good layer.

There are many different opinions on what is the best way to reseal.  And I'm willing to bet that they are all correct.  :)  All I know is that we have 1600 lbs. of water sitting in our 210, that we only pulled out one seam to reseal.  We didn't reseal the entire tank, and it's been just fine.

However, the first tank we resealed, we pulled out all the old silicone and resealed the entire tank.  We were nervous since it was our first really big tank, and also our first time to reseal and wanted to make sure that we did everything exactly right.

Do you mean that you put a thin layer down and let it dry, then add a thick layer?  I read that silicone will not bind well if applied on top of dry silicone.

I didn't let it dry. The thin layer was just to make sure it went in good.

                  Re: leaking fish tank

I've resealed a tank before... I'd have helped out if I had seen this thread sooner.

one thing I read and have used to get nice straight edges on the silicone is to put a piece of masking tape on either side of the corner your sealing, so after you smooth the silicone with your finger or spoon you can peel the tape up and get nice straight edges on it.

I couldn't find my blue painters tape I bought not too long ago, so I used black electrical tape when I resealed a tank and it works pretty good too.
