luxtralarge -- You are going to want to go with a very small pleco at best (they eat more when they are young than they do when they get older) and second a 12" pleco will have absolutely no moving room in a 40g tank.
I have two 8"+ pleco's in a 75 and they have outgrown the tank. Â Next time I break it down (sometime this summer hopefully sooner than later) they are going to a member here who has a pond where they will have the space to swim in.
Common pleco's are cheap and easy to get but they soon outgrow almost any tank you can put them in sadly... :(
