  • Who Needs Shells ???

This is going to get long, but just bare with me and it might be a happy ending  :)

I need some more shells for the shell-dweller tank I'm doing (see my post over in the African Cichlid area).  I picked up the tank Sunday and then spent another $20 driving to 2-3 LFS and never found shells I liked.

Looking for Japanese Land Snail, Whales Eye, Babylonia Spirata, etc.

I can order some from various websites, best price I found on most was about 27 cents/shell, if buying more than 25 shells and then add shipping, probably 35 cents per shell once your done.

I can get 24 Whales Eye shipped to me from Aquabid for $13.49.

Then I found this wholesaler's website. Shellhorizons.com that has great prices.  Only catch is, you have to order a minimum of $50.

For that $50 (Actually $50.50), I can get 100 Fernandezi Snails, 100 Japanese Land Snails, 100 Yellow Land Snails, 100 Whales Eye and a gallon of Babylonia Spirata (not sure how many that is, one link on the website says a gallon of 1/2 to 2-1/2 inch shells is 350'ish pieces).  All of those are listed in the "Medium Size" section on the website (go check it out).   Still have to pay for shipping, but I'm guessing all of that would fit into a 23X16X11 25lb box that they ship Florida to LA for $25.14, a little less to Kingwood I'd think.

Worst Case,...  If shipping is double (2 boxes), that's still a delivered price of about 20cents per shell, less for the Babylonia Spirata depending on how many are in a gallon.

So, here's where all of you come in.   Who's interested in part of the action ?

I'm not looking to make money on this, just splitting the cost.  Once shells come in, we could set up a date/time/location to meet and part them out.  If it works well, maybe we do it again later with other shells or a bigger order ?   I'd also be open to swapping shells for fish as I'm getting my 20 gallon-planted back up and running after taking it down before I left town for 9 months if anyone would be interested in going that route.

So, who's in and for about how many shells and which types ?

Have you looked at http://www.cichlidbreeding.com  this is where I got mine and they where reasonable... I got the Breeding Shells Japanese Snail .30 a piece... and I didnt have to order xx number to get them shipped to me.  I bought about 60 different shells to try out what I liked.. and those are the ones I ended up dropping in the tank.
Check em out and see what you think :)

Zulaab, I did look there, they had some of the best prices, even a little better of you ordered 25 or more of one type. But I really want some Whales Eye to go with the Japanese Snail shells I already have, but they are out of stock on the Whales Eye, and don't know when they are going to get any in.

        Eat more Escargo
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

I would definitely be interested in getting in on some shells.  I am looking at setting my 20 long back up for a Shellie tank and will need some shells.  I am not picky on what I get so you decide what you like and I can get some of the leftovers.

Just let me know when and where and I will meet up with you.

                      Re: Who Needs Shells ???

there are always a buttload of whale eye shells at galveston. it may not be so practical to try and collect now, after Ike, but we'd always go hermit crab harvesting for our SW tanks every time we went down there. we'd come back with dozens and dozens of shells, with about 40% being whale eye. if they weren't empty, we emptied them on the stove. :)

thinking about it... SteveCGG probably hasnt been thinking about shells at all since Ike... I know he had a lot of damage and probably is still rebuilding.
