Here's what I've done with the stand so far. Stripped everything off down to the 2x4's. Wrapped with 3/4" plywood. Added doors that my neighbor (building contractor) gave to me - the middle one is a false door, just for looks. (These are the only locations that the doors could go due to the placement of the supporting lumber). Then I added trim. There's also some trim that I added to the top that kinda put it all together. Today I'll be getting some paint. Probably black to match the tank trim and 72" light that sits on stands across the top of the tank trim. What do you guys think?
Thanks Steve. The door holes happened to be just the right size for the free doors. That's how Phish designed the framing for the stand. I know that I could've gotten taller doors that overlapped the holes a lot towards the top, but this seemed to work. Just like they recommend (overlap 1/2" on each side).
Do you guys think black will look alright? I was gonna use the Behr Kitchen and Bath so that if it got wet it would be ok. Also, does anyone know if I need to use primer/sealer before applying the top coat? I'm new to all of this....
Black is nice, but if not kept clean will show dust and dirt faster, a nice choice would be a dark cherry stain or something along that line.
My personal preference would be to sand the stand to a smooth touch and then stain in several coats, once you get a color you like, use a sealer or varnish if you will to cover the stain and protect the wood from moisture.
Have fun... :)

Truth is the cement that holds the bricks and stones of a sane and civilized society together. Remove the former and the latter will crumble.
Peter -- the only thing I do on all of my stands is to finish off the whole thing with a poly coat.. I dont want to the wood to ever get a chance to get "wet" and start having rot issues.

The stuff we used is the Minwax® Fast Drying Polyurethane Satin
Depending on what gloss you might want after the poly is dry you choose the kind you want. This will make your stuff very shiny if you choose that kind... others will not make it shiny... just make sure that you do add the poly because I have had a few spills in my time and this helped.
