I used lava rocks (which you can buy at home depot and whole lot cheaper) for my canister! All the ceramic rings does is acts as biological filter which the lava rocks will do the same!

+1 for the lava rocks....give them a good rinsing with hot water and you're good to go....

Try to pick out the ones with lots of pores/holes on them...

Are these the ones? I don't want anything to happen to my fish.

No, the one I used is called Red Lava rocks which is located in the garden section of home depot. The rocks are bigger and porous. Just give them a very, very good rinse because there are many dust and residue.

Correct, they are found in the Garden Dept, and have a ton of red rock dust on them. Rinse them well, with hot water and you are ready to place into your filter. Again, try to find smaller stones with lots of pores on them.

Lava Rock: Lava rock is porous, light, irregularly shaped and not available in all areas. This type of stone generally offers good drainage and packs down well. Additional layers must sometimes be added to maintain ground cover thickness. Lava rock is available in red or black hues and usually ranges in size from 3/4" to 1-1/4". You can use lava rock in driveways, gardens and along paths and walkways.

To be sure about using them in your filter....BOIL them...

Sounds about right, maybe less than 10.00....I think I paid under 15.00 for two bags last time, but they where ripped open and I got a discount for the two of them.

I've been cutting pvc pipe into rings and tumbling it with rocks and sand to rough it up a bit to use as biomedia in my pond filter.  might be agood option if you have old pvc lying around.
