  • WTB: In a hurry to get Food for tiny fry

My honey gourami just unexpectedly bred, and I find myself in desperate need of food small enough for their fry.  I have Hikari first bites, but that might not be small enough,

so does anyone have a starter culture of vinegar eels or banana worms or something - they had some at the auction, but I didn't realize how small the fry would be nor that they would hatch so soon.

I have somewhere between 15-30 survivors and I would love to be able to raise them.

Since I am in a hurry and internet access is erratic for me, please call me at 713-382-3432 if you can help.  Any advice is also appreciated

I don't know about Gourami but my cichlid frys and platy frys eat crushed flakes.

        Hi there,

I doubt I have enough rotifers to feed your whole batch, but if you breed fish whose fry is too small to eat BBS (gouramis, barbs, rasboras, all tetras etc.), you definitely need to have Brachionus Plicatilis, brackish water rotifers.
I am ready to help with the culture. It is free for you. I was looking for it for half a year, found couple years ago somewhere in FL and purchased online. I don't know if it is easy to buy it now. I almost don't use it, but keep the culture just in case. What you need is aged water, dry yeast and some aquarium salt to make water brackish. I live in Pearland. Come home from work after 7 p.m.

Microworms is not good food for your fry. I have them too, if you need the starter culture. Yes, they are free too.

          Thanks Arkadiy!

Why aren't micro worms good?  just curious...

          Also, what is aged water?

Aged water means tap water that was kept in an open container for a few days to remove chlorine. If you take tap water directly from tap all rotifers will die. As an alternative, you can take some water from your aquarium and use it for ritifers.

I used microworms many times, for many years, with no good result. Probably they are not nutritious enough or have deficiency of some vital elements... I don't know. I still use them as a food supplement, but not as a main food. Tiger barbs or rasboras, I think, will do better eating microworms that gouramis or tetras.

Then I would be very interested in getting a rotifers culture from you.  Right now they are swimming around in a bunch of duck weed, so I am hoping there are a few rotifers for them in there.

I have aquarium salt, at least the fresh water kind - so I need ocean salt?  I also have dry yeast.

                Hi!
I posted in your other thread but i have a full vinegar eel culture that you can have.

If they are too small for BBS, then i'm willing to bet that they are also too small for microworms as well.

                I'm in the galleria area.

Since Betta fry are also very tiny, you might check with PhishPhreek for some starter cultures.  You can PM him here, or go to his website here:

                  PhishPhreek

He's in Texas City, but it's worth a shot as well.  If they are finding micro organisms to nibble on in the duck weed, they should be ok until you can get them on a regular diet.  Angel fry are fairly small as well, so I sometimes start them out on microworms, them progressively move them to larger food.  I usually do this when my BBS batch crashes   .
