    books

    Hello all :)

    So I've been 'fishing' around for a book or two on raising cichlids.  I've found a few at Amazon.com, but before I buy one online I was wondering if any of you old salts have any cichlid books you might be looking to get rid of?

    I mean really- if you already know everything, why not pass on some of your books? LOL.

    A recommendation or two would suffice though, if you can't part with your favorite :)

      Just an idea, if it hasn't already crossed your mind....subscribe to one of the tropical fish magazines....there's an excellent edition of Tropical Fish for December out right now.....it's available at petsmart, probably same with petco....

          Oh, just an old Navy word....  You've got a good ol' Navy Vet here :)

          It comes from the old days, when sailors rode out a storm and had lots of sea spray in thier face, making them "salty".

                  I was an AO (Aviation Ordnanceman) which means I assembled bombs.  My battle station on the carrier CVN-73 was the .50 cal.  Imagine that!  A tree hugger shooting a .50 cal.....

                      LOL --  My roomates brother just retired after 20 in the Navy..  -- besides that lets talk books...

                      Which cichlids are you looking at, and more important what do you want to get into ?

                      Here is a list of books I like for Africans and these books will give you great information about the fish and their needs individual needs in aquariums.

                      Both the below books I believe is a MUST have if you want to keep Lake Tanganyika Cichlids

                      Back to Nature: Guide to Tanganyika Cichlids, Revised & Expanded Second Edition by Ad Konings (Hardcover - Nov 30, 2005)
                      Tanganyika Cichlids in their natural habitat by Ad Konings (Hardcover - Dec 1998)

                      Both the below books I believe is a MUST have if you want to keep Lake Malawi Cichlids

                      Malawi Cichlids in their Natural Habitat, New 4th Edition by Ad Konings (Hardcover - Nov 30, 2007)
                      Back to Nature: Malawi Cichlids (Revised & Expanded Edition) by Ad Konings (Hardcover - Nov 30, 2003)

                      --  Now any book Aqualog are awesome -- *expensive
                      Anything that www.cichlidpress.com releases, is quite good too... the books above are from cichlidpress.
                      I dont know any good books for other fish and their area, but like I said, Aqualog and anything from cichlidpress...  will do you VERY well in the long run and will not steer you wrong.

                          I just got three Paratilapias, and I'm finding it difficult to get information on them.  They're Madagascar Cichlids.  Does their habitat closely resemble that of the Tanganyika or Malawi cichlids?  I eventually want to have them in a 120g or 300g with rocks and a few friends (corys, an exotic snail, etc).
