  • Free Convict Cichlids

I know this is short notice, but I'm moving my fish to another tank tonight, and if anyone wants some convict cichlids, you can have some. Lord knows they'll make more I have everything from fry guys to bigger ones, but I really want to thin out the herd and get some more colorful fish in there instead.

I live in Deer Park- right by the Hobby Lobby at BW8 and Pasadena/Redbluff

If not tonight, I can meet up over the weekend if anyone's interested

How do you tell if they're males or females?

Clearly both are in there, but they all kind of look the same to me

the females will have an orange patch on both there sides right where there belly is.

this will intinsify in breeding females.
males will just have the regular old convict barring.

Well, some of them do sort of have a metallic-y orangy reddish area on their sides. If you want them, you're welcome to come interview them and take the ones you want. There's only a few I'd like to keep- one of them being 'smushface' who has his mouth way off center for some reason

Also, there are one or two who have something on them, and I don't know what it is. On each fish, it's around the base of one pectoral fin, and it's like some sort of growth. Sort of what 'proud flesh' is like on horses? It was on the bigger fish when I got them a while ago, and it didn't seem to spread to anyone else, but with the great fish roundup, I noticed a smaller fish has a little of it.

What is it? Should I be doing anything about it? Can the others catch it? Do I have my own little convict cichlid leper colony??

It has never seemed to bother the fish, but if it's something that will be passed to others, I don't want anyone else taking any from the group (I didn't remember this until I saw that one again as I was catching the fish)

You happen to have a picture you can post of it?

no... I should have snapped one while I had him in the net. It's a growth, like a ring around the base of his pectoral fin, but attached to the body (like a donut with the fin in the middle) and it is pink- looks like bubble gum? I know this would be a lot easier with a picture- if I can get one, I will. Can fish get cancer? That's almost what it seems like- almost like a tumor of some sort. I noticed one of the small one has a little bit of it, but I would think if it were something contageous, others would have gotten it by now?

I had honestly forgotten about that one and that growth. Aside from that, they are all healthy and seem fine. Hope I don't look like I'm trying to pawn off sick fish!!

Ok, here are the best pictures I could get.

I know they're not very good pictures, but hopefuly you can get an idea. In the pictures it looks almost like a lesion on his body, but it looks like a mass outside of his body. I couldn't get a picture of the little one that has a smaller version of it.

The rest of them seem totally healthy, here are some pics
(sorry about the glare, low water level, and dirty glass!)

Sounds good. I'll give you a call tomorrow. I should be around most of the afternoon getting caught up on things around the house.
