  • WTB: small piece of clear acrylic

Can somebody hook a fellow boxer up with a small piece of acrylic? I am looking for something approximately 13 ½” x 1”.

I recently put a 70w MH light over my 26G bowfront and the black center brace is casting a shadow. I wish to replace the center brace with a piece of clear acrylic to remediate this problem. The tank glass appears too thin and the tank almost 19” tall so I don’t feel comfortable in removing the current brace completely. I plan on simply snipping out most of the current brace and bolting on the clear strip as I have seen this done on other sites.

Oh yea, where can I get plastic bolts and wingnuts? Right now I only have 1/4" zinc parts.

Also any other comments/suggestions/warnings would be appreciated… or not depending on tact... but feel free!

Home Depot sells the plastic bolts and nuts your after, and I have a piece of plastic that would work for you, but you would need to cut it???

I would suggest strongly if you want to not have the shadow to Euro brace your tank, because even a clear piece of Acrylic will make a shadow over time, and will become algae filled and cut the light down again.

Where in Home Depot? I went to one on Jones and 249 and searched the hardware isle high and low to no avail.

I was hoping to find someone who could quickly (and competently) cut a piece for me. I am not afraid of such work but lack the correct tools and experience in this material. If I get no such offers I will take you up on your piece as we are in the same area. Thanks CF!

Solid advice. However you may be overestimating the effort and expense I am willing to put into solving this problem. The tank is already set up. To replace the brace I simply need to remove half of the water, put a couple of clamps across the tank, drill holes, snip out the old brace and bolt the new piece in, and replace the water. That should only take a few minutes. I would not even know where to being in order to retro fit this tank with a euro brace. Do you have any info on how to retrofit a bowfront with a euro brace?

If I am stuck with the simple center brace swap, I will take your point to heart, and will now seek 2 pieces instead of 1, so that I can swap it out in the future

If you look in the electrical dept, they have those plastic bolts with wing nuts in little plastic bags, they are kept in those metal bins that have a label on the outside of the box, showing you what's inside. It's a small parts bin or something like that.....

what dimensions exactly do you need that piece of plastic/acrylic

Thanks, I will go back and take another peek at HD. The size would be 13 ½” x 1” x whatever_is_thick_enough.

Plastic would probably not handle the heat of the MH, so it would have to be acrylic or something like that.

Wouldn't acrilic solvent work better than bolts ?
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Yes I think so, and I actually have some. Need to weigh the pros and cons.

I have seen where you can cut out the brace. leave a tab on both sides. drill a hole in it and use multi strand plastic coated cable and crimps to make a brace. cable is like the kind for shark fishing leaders. I have all of this stuff if you want to borrow it. including the crimping tool.
